As a student in Taylor’s university, we are trained to do projects which are marked and graded by our beloved lecturers. What lies beyond a university’s studies is a working life of an architect who works day and night to strive in this never ending growth of built environment. An architect’s life at work is very contrasting to what we do a university as everything done in office will be accounted and held responsible if anything is wrong or right. A smallest amount of error can make things go real bad, from endangering a built environment or even people’s lives. The experience I got from an intensive nine weeks of internship was extremely valuable and worth remembering, As my first hand to hand experience in working life of an architect I have personally learnt a lot of things in this course in the form of projects alongside my colleagues. Since my knowledge in architecture is not as much to as a registered architect with years of experience, it was very clear that the amount of skill required to be successful in this field wasn’t an easy game. From the first day at internship till the end I was given a variety of tasks to do. Manual construction detailing was the first task I was given to do and things progressed from there into other matters like designing commercial buildings to preparing presentation proposals with site analysis. Working on 3d modeling in Google Sketchup and using ACAD were just to name a few. Setting up appointments and going to site visits for inspection were an added interest to all the work. Luckily, throughout my time period I am grateful that there was always some work to do even if we had met a deadline for a certain projects. In university, the deadlines for projects are usually weeks where as at work there were no rules as to how long a deadline could be for a certain project. The hard part was that most of the time the deadlines for certain projects are very short and teamwork was the major key in successfully making 2 proposal happen within the given time limit. An example is when we had to come up with a design proposal of a Mass Housing in flood affected region in Kelantan. The whole proposal had to be compiled into a presentation booklet that included few different options of houses in 3d, plans, site analysis, calculations, method of construction, etc. within a half'a working day. As time progressed in the office | observed how the architects worked smart and managed their time to multi task, dealing with so many things at the same time. They gave me ideas and vision on how to design environmentally friendly buildings and respect the nature. The supervising architect knew that giving us the same thing to do over and over again like ACAD wasn’t the best idea to gain experience within the limited time, hence they gave me variety of projects, of ARC 2656 INTERNSHIP REPORT T TAYLOR'S UNIVERSITY STUDENT ID: 0306623 which I had different things to do, My first project in the office was to help a colleague in designing a Condotel in Melacca. It was the first time I designed a multi storey building with podium parking and amenities. It was also my first time that I used Google Sketchup to make a 3d model of this building. I leamed to deal with by-laws and other matters in designing a large building that is a combination of Condominium and a Hotel. One project that | was told to do all alone was a reconstruction of a mosque in Kelantan that got washed away due to flood. | attended the discussions of the architects learning the importance of brainstorming and being true to the instincts, for e.g. sometimes when I was working on a project and I asked unnecessary questions, my boss would motivate me that it’s my project and I am the one who should come with the ideas which was a valuable lesson for me to enhance my decision making skills. One interesting project | encountered was a designing the layouts for a multi storey building in Kajang. The building is to be built next to the highway whereby the land is not at all proportionate but rather a triangle. The thing that got my attention was the laws for building this structure; the building setbacks, perimeter planting, road reserve and so on. At the end, the land being triangular, making layouts for standard sized units in a cramped gross floor area was a very big challenge. 1 understood as to how a certain project is carried out, how a client’s demands are met and the flow of a project; the enormous amount of tender drawings, documentation, dealing with the authorities and setting up meetings, etc. ‘The following pages include the major projects I have been involved in: ARC 2656 INTERNSHIP REPORT T TAYLOR'S UNIVERSITY su uA Wa OA [J essere STUDENT ID: 0306623, 20 PROJECTS 24 CONDOTEL MELACCA A site has been identified within hospital PKJ Melacca, Permaisuri Hotel and Hang Jebat Stadium in Melacca Tengah. The site sits on 3 acres of a Condotel with 120 units and commercial as well. The objective of this project was to develop a Condotel building and layout planning to the site area, The condotel had to be welll - designed and make the client achieve relaxation and give an affordable lifestyle experience in the trendiest area at Melacca SITE ANALYSIS.
