Lesson Title: Crash Test Project Timing: 40 minutes

Target Audience:
High School Physics Class

Objectives:
Students Will Be Able To:
• Demonstrate knowledge of impulse, momentum, and basic kinematics
• Work together in teams to analyze crash tests

The Teacher Will Be Able To:

• Assess student understanding of kinematics
• Give students an opportunity to develop their understanding through group
work

Standards Assessed:
NY State Standards in the Physical Setting Performance Indicator 5.1 d, k, o, p, q, r

Misconception(s) Addressed:
• Momentum is the same as force
• Impulse is a force
• Impulse and impact are the same
• Momentum is not conserved in collisions with "immovable"
objects
• Momentum and kinetic energy are the same

Prior Knowledge: Impulse, momentum, and kinematics.

Aim: Evaluate the rating of cars by their crash test.

Concept Map Vocabulary: n/a

Necessary Preparation:
COPIES
• Crash Test Evaluation Worksheet (2 per student)
MATERIALS
• Computer for each group
• Stopwatch for each group
• Extra calculators
SET UP
• Make sure each computer works and there are alternative sites if YouTube doesn’t
work.

Lesson Plan

Aim: Evaluate the rating of cars by their crash test.

Physics Push-Up: Car Commercial (2-3 minutes)

Watch the Liberty Mutual commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFcjTM57ENk) on a
loop for 2-3 minutes and journal about all the physics they see in the video.

Activity: Car Crash Test Evaluation (20 minutes)

Materials:
• Computers for each group, which will watch one of the videos listed
below
• Crash Test Evaluator Worksheets for each student
• Stopwatch
• Calculators

Procedure:
• Students work in groups of three
• Groups watch their assigned crash test video
• Students research the necessary information to complete the worksheet
• Students complete equations in order to determine the forces
Becky McCoy

• Groups look up the crash test rating for their vehicle

• One representative from each group writes their result for force on the
driver as well as the published rating for their car on the board

Activity Summary: Class Discussion (15 minutes)

Groups present to the rest of the class what they found and compare their own findings with the
published ratings. A class discussion on the results should result in questions and hypotheses
about car design and why certain cars perform better or worse than others.

Homework: 2nd Evaluation worksheet (2 minutes)

Pick a crash test video we didn’t use in class and fill out a second evaluation worksheet.

Exit Strategy: Index Card (2 minutes)

On an index card, students write which results surprised him or her and which they think they
could’ve predicted.

Extension Activity:
Extend the class discussion by discussing important aspects of car construction – how could car
companies build their cars differently to perform better in crashes?

Assessment:
• Teacher evaluation of group worksheets
• Listening to class and small group discussions
• Exit strategy
• Homework

Crash Test Evaluation

Complete the checklist and equations below as a group. Each person should hand in
his or her own completed copy of this evaluation.
囗 Watch your video.
囗 Search online for the curb weight of the
vehicle you are evaluating. Also look for
the velocity used in crash testing.
囗 Use YouTube or your stopwatch to determine the
length of impact.
囗 If your video is side impact, find the force
applied in the impact.
囗 Calculate the momentum and impulse of your
vehicle.
囗 Find the force on the passengers in the front
seat.
囗 Search for the crash test rating for your
make/model for the given year.
NOTE: the quality and design of a car can vary drastically from year to year.
囗 Send a representative to the board to write
down your result for force on the driver as
well as the published crash test rating for
the test you evaluated.
