ASSIGNMENT #2: PIT OPTIMIZATION

MinE-517 Open Pit Mine Planning & Design

Due Date: March 7th, 2015

Question #1: Open Pit Optimization and Mine Production Plan

Figure 1 illustrates a section of an open pit layout to be optimized to generate the mineable reserves,
maximum pit value and the associated stripping ratio for production planning purposes. Block
dimensions are 50 ft (high) X 50 ft (width) X 50 ft (thick).
Waste density = ore density = 2.00 tons/yd3.
The following economic parameters are available:
Cut-off grade: 50% metal
Low grade ore: 50% < g <= 75% metal
High grade ore: g > 75%
The unit cost of mining (waste or ore) from the first bench (row): $10.00/ton
Increase in unit mining cost with depth: $4.00/ton/bench beneath the first bench
Waste dump cost: $3/ton
Processing cost for high grade ore: $16.00/ton
Processing cost for low grade ore: $20.00/ton
Revenue: $120/ton

PROBLEMS
1. Use the economic parameters given to estimate the total costs, total revenues and the economic
block values (EBVs) for extracting waste blocks and extracting and processing ore blocks from each
bench.
[20]
2. Using the floating cone algorithm, obtain the optimized pit layout, the mineable reserves, the
optimized pit value and the associated stripping ratios in tons/ton based on the EBVs created in
problem 1.
[25]
3. a) Create an excel sheet that implements Learch-Grossman (LG) algorithm. The excel file must be
able to take the 2-D sections of this mine and the economic parameters as input and generates the
optimum pit value using the LG algorithm.
b) Use the file created in part-a to obtain the optimized pit layout (using LG algorithm), the
mineable reserves, the optimized pit value and the associated stripping ratios in tons/ton, bank
cubic meters/ton.
[50]
4. Comment on your results in Problem 2 and Problem 4.
