GFWC Grand Haven Woman's Club

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE SANDY HOLLENBECK

The Grand Haven Woman's Club shall be organized exclusively to promote charitable and educational activities.

Happy Heart Month! February is Heart

in several ways.
It is
OCMonthFEBRUARY
2015
a focus on the health of our heart--making sure that we maintain a heart
healthy lifestyle to keep our hearts in good condition. Then, of course
its February 14th, Valentines Day, which focuses on love in our hearts
and that cute little guy that flies around with a bow and arrow. I want
to share with you another matter of the heart that focuses on kindness,
thoughtfulness and consideration.

Our club is growing so large so quickly which is a wonderful situation.

With the changes in our size, I dont want us to lose sight of the purpose
of why we are a Womans Club. I sat down and quietly read our club
purpose and the Collect which is a prayer and the basis of which the
Federation and our club are founded. I think this is a perfect month to
really focus on what we read each month in the Collect---from one heart
to another of women working together for large ends

Keep us, O God, from pettinessLet us be done with faultfinding

Meet each other without prejudice Make us to grow calm, serene,
gentleStrive to know the common human heart of us alland O Lord
God, let us forget not to be kind.
These are very powerful heartfelt words that I hope we are all trying to
live by. We have many new members and I hope that we never lose sight
of making each other feel like we belong and are as one.
My challenge to all of you this month is to make one new friend at the
February luncheon. Take the time to greet someone you dont know. Ask
them about themselves and make them feel welcome. Remember that
our club is not a Lunch Bunch and that we are organized exclusively to
promote and provide educational and charitable activities. The fun part
and being with friends comes naturally. In closing, I think the last
phrase of our Collect says it all
Let us forget not to be kind.
"Have a Happy Heart Month! I hope to see all of you February 16th.
We have another great program planned with a very special speaker.

Memorial Day of Games!
Well, the biggest fundraiser of the club year is over and it
was a huge success. Thank you all for your support.
Unfortunately, the income was a little less than last year, but
still a success. This I believe was due to the fact a large
number of attendees did not buy any tickets for the raffle
or the share and share. In the future, if you invite guests,
please encourage them to support this fundraiser by buying
raffle tickets it is the charities that we support, not our
club, that benefit from the income that we make. We do
have a projected income that we expect to make for the
year.

Membership - Annemarie Schutz

Here is a recap of the event: 149 ladies for lunch and an

afternoon of cards and camaraderie, for a total income of
$2,750.00.
I wish to thank all of our members who donated items for the
baskets or a total basket. The baskets were WONDERFUL!
Having our members donate like this gives one a feeling of
participation in the entire event and makes Sherrys job of
putting together the baskets so much easier.
I also wish to thank my faithful committee for all their help
before the day and during the event. It certainly was a
pleasure for me to work with them.
We now have four more months in this club year that we ask
for your continued support. Keep your eyes open for new
and exciting raffle gifts at the next meeting.

LETS DO LUNCH DIANNE ROBICHAUD, NANCY RICHARDS,
JELENA KAVENY
To start the New Year off and to take some calories off, Dale Curran hosted a
Salad Themed luncheon. She made a Vietnamese Beef and Rice Noodle Salad. This
summery classic Vietnamese salad is a jumble of tastes and textures and
temperatures that jolt the senses in the best possible way. Sirloin marinated in
lemongrass and fish sauce lends the recipe to a unique blend of flavors. I like the
approach by Pauline Nguyen when she tells her readers the step by step approach in
making this salad which is labor intensive: "Take a moment to pour yourself a beer
and nosh on a handful or peanuts." To accompany this dish the rest of us brought
simple salads and for dessert we had chocolate dipped strawberries By the way,
Dale originally tried this dish in Vietnam while on tour. So if you are interested in
making this recipe, you know who to call. Our next luncheon is in March and we say
welcome to a new member, Rosalie Schlaufman.
If you are interested in joining or perhaps coming as a guest, please contact either
Nancy Richards, Jelena Kaveney or Dianne Robichaud.

PRESIDENTS PROJECT - SALLY NORD

Wow, its amazing how those pennies add up. Since the beginning of this year, we
have collected $75.00. At our February meeting, we are honored to have
Carole Weaver, GFWC State President, as our guest speaker. This year GHWC
budgeted $500.00 for the State Presidents Project, which was submitted in
December. Now, due to our successful fundraising, we will be able to give an
additional donation to Caroles State Project, Canine Companions for
Independence/Wounded Veterans Initiative. Thank you all for your support.

MORE NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT..

The numbers are in and the 2014 reports are completed and sent to the District
and State for review!!
Our Clubs theme for 2014-2015 is Volunteerand Make a Difference. And that
we have done! Due to the generosity of all our members, the GHWC has made
contributions to Special Olympics, Heifer International, Family Life Center, Florida
Hospital Flagler, Flagler Humane Society and Palm Coast Arts Foundation, to name a
few. (A complete list of charities that we sponsor is found in our directory that
each member is given.) We provide an annual scholarship to a graduating senior
from Matanzas High School & Flagler/Palm Coast High School, support the Stuff
Bus and we donate food and dollars to Church Women Uniteds Food Bank in Bunnell.
In 2014 $11,495 was raised by the Grand Haven Womans Club to be donated to
local organizations. In addition, we served as a collection point for several local
organizations. Through the incredible generosity from our membership, individual
direct contributions of cash and goods had an estimated value of $17,500 plus.
I am so proud of our club and all our members. Great Job Ladies!!!

Sandy Hollenbeck

FOOD PANTRY TERRY RANERI & SHERYL MARVIN

Remember to send your hearts out this month to all those in Flagler County who are
food insufficient by donating to the Resource Center food bank and to the Family
Life shelter. There is a need for all types of canned foods, especially protein
items, vegetables and fruits. Peanut butter and jelly and cereals are always
welcome. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as apples, carrots, potatoes, onions and
other long lasting fruits and vegetables are always a treat.
Remember, donations of cash or checks are always appreciated. Checks may be
made out to the Family Life Center or to Church Women United.
Thank you to all of you who are so generous each month. Both agencies really are in
need and appreciate your donations.

Sheryl

THE MATERIAL GIRLS- BARBARA WHITE

A newspaper article stated that physicians and surgeons laud knitting and
handiwork as it prevents arthritis, triggers healthy activity of your brain,
decreases the odds of later cognitive impairment and memory loss. Come join our
friendly group and be well and happy!!
The Material Girls will meet on Monday, February 23rd from 1- 3 p.m. at
Barbara White's home at 27 Southlake Drive. Please e-mail or call me 246-6291 if
you plan to attend.
We're working on scarves, including new ones named Illusions & Mobius cowls and
finishing up many of our older projects of Potato Chip and Sashay scarves,
crocheted necklaces, dish cloths, etc. We have patterns for these and also chemo
cap and prayer shawl patterns.
Eight chemo caps were created and donated this month, which will be delivered to
the Flagler Oncology Center and Florida Cancer Specialists. Thank you, ladies, as
these are very much appreciated!!
Hope to see you!

EDUCATION - CATHY WHITBY & MARTHA MORSE

February is upon us and along with hearts, flowers, and candy, come plans for the
GHWCs Annual Book Sale which will be held on Saturday, April 11th at the Village
Center. Please hold onto any books (hard bound and paperback), CDs and DVDs for
our sale. We are hoping for a good response for the event, despite the onslaught
of online book sales.
I will distribute sign-up sheets at the February meeting for neighborhood
coordinators. Please consider volunteering so that we can have one coordinator
from each village to collect books. More workers make for less work!
Speaking of good workers, we would like to give credit to the 15 GHWC members
who very generously volunteered their time to the Flagler School System and
Flagler Libraries during 2014. They are: Fran Anderson, Patty Baldini, Dee Dee
Beadle, Nancy Carlton, Karen Finder, Kelli Jebbia, Gail Naworal, Beth Havens, Anne
Rogers, Stephanie Leroux, Paula Benham, Mary Davidson, Patricia Malak, Peggy
Smith, Ivonne Wetjens. Their time and effort resulted in 881 hours working with
and for Flagler County residents. Thank you so much.
We would like to ask that all education volunteers please keep track of your hours
so that we can include them in our state report at year's end. If any member would
like to volunteer for this worthwhile project, please contact me at
babs539@aol.com.

GO RED SUPPORT HEART MONTH

SHOW YOUR
HEART
SOME LOVE
Heart disease kills more women than cancer does. Below are some healthy
indulgences that can help keep your heart beating strong
Give in to your Sweet Tooth People who eat chocolate five or more times a week
have a 57 percent lower risk of developing heart disease than those who dont
indulge. Previous research suggests that dark chocolate may also improve blood
pressure.
Have more Sex- Research shows sex reduces cortisol levels. Cortisol raises blood
pressure and destroys arterial lining.
Enjoy an Omelet- Yes, eggs contain cholesterol, but the amount is negligible and
eating them will not push your levels over the top. Plus, yolks are loaded with
nutrients, including protein, vitamin B12 and folate.
Go with the Flow- Yoga helps your nervous system deal with stress. In a recent
study, prehypertensive individuals who did yoga and enrolled in behavioral
modification programs lowered their blood pressure more than those who only
changed their habits.
Sweat, then Sip- Researchers found that people who exercised regularly and
drank wine modestly saw a drop in bad LDL cholesterol and a rise in good HDL
levels. Sedentary drinkers showed only a reduction in LDL. So dont skip the gym for
happy hour- hit both

COMMUNITY NEWS KAREN FINDER
Every year, Americans suffer more than 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes,
explained Stefany Strong, public information officer for the Florida Department of
Health in Volusia County. It is important for our residents to maintain a healthy
lifestyle, eat nutritious meals, and participate in regular physical activity to keep
their hearts healthy.
For nearly 100 years, cardiovascular disease has caused more deaths in the U.S.
than any other cause. The good news is that within the past 40 years, there has
been a striking reduction in coronary heart disease deaths in men. The bad news is

that reductions in women have lagged behind, says Volusia/Flagler Florida Hospital
spokesperson, Lindsay Rew.
To help address this problem, the CDC has created what it calls the Million Hearts
Initiative, a national initiative that aims to prevent one million heart attacks and
strokes by 2017. The center is pushing these heart-healthy tips that correspond
with the ABCs:

A: Take aspirin as directed by your health care provider.B: Control your blood
pressure.C: Manage your cholesterol.S: Dont smoke.
For more information on heart health, consult your doctor or visit the American
Heart Association online at www.heart.org. Excerpted from Daytona Times, Feb 13

CONSERVATION FRAN CHIODO

If youve checked in on the eaglets at the eagles.org website lately you see how big
they are and they have lost almost all that baby fuzz. The Name the Eaglets
contest has closed but the names have not yet been announced, and neither has the
gender of the eaglets.
The Right Whales have been sighted off Daytona but not off Flagler Beach as of
yet. There are 3 females, each with a calf out there somewhere.
Remember to recycle! The money the city gets from your recycling efforts has
funded Christmas Tree Recycling Events, Trees for the Belle Terre Median,
Elementary School Student Tree Giveaways, and many others.
