As a result of this lesson, students will collate information about trees and construct
individual non-fiction texts.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Set up resources in learning area.


Make sure interactive whiteboard and
marker is set up for brainstorming activity.
Ensure all i-pads are fully charged for use
in photographing activity.

Provision for students at educational risk:


Spend additional time with students
struggling with finding the information they
need to complete the lesson.

Motivation and Introduction:


Introduce the lesson: Teacher: Today we are going to use our computer skills to create our
own short books about our science topic Trees. We are going to work in groups of four to create
our books.
We will use our class i-pads to:

Take photographs,
Write the information (facts) we have collected and
Publish our e- books using a My Story App

questioning and giving some examples. Teacher
brainstorms students ideas on the Interactive White
Board and students use Groupboard Collaborative
Whiteboard on the i-pads in pairs to enter facts from the
interactive brainstorm.
Focus Questions:

What are the features of a tree? Trunk,


branches, leaves, flowers, roots, fruit, nuts.
What is a large area of trees called? A forest
Why are trees so important in our
environment? They provide clean air for us to
breathe, they keep the environment clean, they
provide shade.
What do trees need to grow? Water, soil,
sunlight
What are some different trees you can
name? Gum trees, pine trees, willow trees,
apple trees
What are trees used for? To provide homes
for birds and animals, to provide wood for
building furniture and houses.

Assessment:
The lesson objectives will have been met if students
have successfully researched, collated and uploaded
information about trees and created a My Story e-book.
These will be judged according to students uploaded
stories on the class Kidblog site.
Students use of print, audio software and word
processing programs will be marked from their My Story
blogs.
