In the case of Typhoid Mary I rule that she be isolated from the
community and provided with medical care and weekly visits of her friends in
New York with constant supervision. I feel that she is a threat to society but
yet we cannot keep her trapped like an animal on a tiny island all alone. This
decision is due to the facts stated in sources. The facts clearly point out that
she had typhoid fever and the health officials have every right to isolate her.
An outbreak of typhoid occurred in the Warner house, according to the
film of the case of Typhoid Mary, professionals searched for the cause of the
disease such as water, shells or spoiled milk but they found nothing. The
family hired George Soper to help them find the cause of the typhoid since
he is a professional on finding the source of Typhoid. George Soper came up
with a lead of a cook the Warner family hired two weeks ago which about the
same time as the incubation time of typhoid. Plus the bacteria of typhoid
fever can only be spread by two ways the first way is by tainted water and
second is by uncooked food. In addition according to Jennifer Rosenberg Mary
Mallon has worked in seven wealthy families in which 22 people have caught
typhoid fever. In one case a little girl died by typhoid fever. Soper tried to get
samples of Marys blood and stool to prove she had typhoid but Mary
refused. Soper then asked the committee of health to help in this problem.
Mary was then unfairly sent to be isolated away from the New York public

without a trail seen as a hazard to the citizens health however according to

Jennifer Rosenberg due to Section 1169 and 1170 if a person sick with any
contagious , pestilential or infectious disease; shall have exclusive charge
and control of the hospitals for the treatment of such cases and ascertaining
the existence and cause of disease or peril to life or health, and for averting
the same, throughout the city stated in the trail of Mary Mallon VS New York
stating they had the right since she was infected with the disease as an
aseptic carrier. According to the film Mary claimed she was not sick but the
Health officials considered carriers much more dangerous than people who
show the disease. Since they can spread the infection without knowing since
they dont show the symptoms. As her defense she stated she sent 10
samples to a professional in his field to examine to see if she had typhoid
fever. The ten tests results were all stated negative stating that there was no
typhoid however it is possible for there to show no signs of the bacteria one
day that is why it must be daily tested. In addition according to Jennifer
Rosenberg health officials had taken and analyzed stool samples from Mallon
approximately once a week which came back intermittently positive with
typhoid, but mostly positive (120 of 163 samples tested positive). They are
taken once a week proving that she did indeed have typhoid fever. Plus the
test is really hard to perform so getting any positive results is good.
According to the film there were other known carriers that werent
isolated. The health officials saw them as no harm to the people since in
order to transmit the disease you need to handle food. But According to the

film there was carriers and infected that were being paid to not cook
however according to the film due to her stubbornness she was basically
used as a message or example of the health officials power since her refusal.
Due to her being Irish she was treated unfairly however according to the film
she was offered chances of gaining her freedom but she flatly refused any
offer they gave her. For example she was offered a book deal by Soper if she
cooperated and the health officials said that if she moved to another state
she could go free. After a while the health officials did let her out of isolation
under certain conditions that she would never be a cook again giving her
freedom but she went straight back to cooking infecting more people by
cooking breaking the deal thus proving that she cannot be trusted.
According to the film in total she affected a total of 41 people with
typhoid fever. She is a menace to society since at the time there was no
vaccine or cure for typhoid. She is too stubborn to believe that she is These
facts help support my claim that Mary is an infectious carrier that is a
menace to society that needs to be isolated for strictly safety reasons.
