Course Description

skills in various forms of writing, critical thinking, researching, and literature analysis. They will
review sentence grammar, punctuation, and usage. They will read a variety of literature
selections possibly including Julius Caesar, Letter from Birmingham Jail, an independent
reading novel, various short stories, and nonfiction texts.
Course Policies
Classroom Expectations:

2. Prepared
3. Polite
4. Participating
5. Personally Responsible
Discipline

1st Infraction Warning
2nd Infraction 30 Minute Detention*/ Parent Contact
3rd Infraction 1 Hour Detention* / Parent Contact
4th Infraction 2 Hour Detention* / Parent Contact

immediate written referral to administration and possible removal from the classroom.
Class Supplies
By Monday, January 12, 2014, you will need to have the following materials: folder, pencils,
notebook paper, post-its. Students are expected to bring these supplies every day.

Absences/ Tardies
Daily attendance is crucial to student success in this course. Per school policy, students who
accrue more than five (5) unexcused absences are subject to having their grade for the class
reduced to a 69. Also, every three tardies to class equals one unexcused absence.
Tardies will be handled in the following manner per school policy:
1st- Warning
2nd Parent Notification
3rd 30 minute detention
4th 1 hour detention
5th 2 hour detention
6th Written referral to administration
Tardy detentions are served Mondays- Thursdays; students will be assigned a specific date to
serve their detention. Tardy detentions are served in the school wide detention and not with the
individual teacher.
Make-Up Work
It is the students responsibility to make up any work missed due to an absence- excused or
unexcused. Students have five days to make up missed assignments. Assignments will be listed
in the Absence Folder in the classroom. Students should check this folder as soon as they return
from an absence in order to know what assignments they need to make up.
Cheating/Copying
Cheating will not be tolerated in this course. All work must be the students original work or
contain appropriate citations to identify the source. Cheating will result in an automatic zero on
the assignment. During a test, there will be absolutely no talking. If a student is caught talking,
it is considered cheating and will be an automatic zero.
Tutoring
Tutoring will be available every Thursday from 2:25pm to 4:25pm or by appointment in my
classroom, room 206. Tutoring is a great time to get caught up on missed work, get clarification
on concepts covered in class, and get help with homework or projects.
Restroom/ Hall Passes
Students will be given three tickets at the beginning of each grading period to be used as
emergency hall passes. If a student wishes to go to leave the room for any reason, he or she must
turn in one of their tickets. Students can earn more tickets with good behavior. Unused tickets
may be turned in for credit points on the final at the end of the semester.
Assessments and Grading
We will have at least three major writing assignments aligned with the Common Core State
Standards. These writing assignments will be a literary analysis, a narrative piece, and a
research/argument paper.

Your grade will be calculated as shown below:

Grading formula for 9-weeks grade:
Daily Work 40%- classwork, homework, and participation
Assessments and Tests 60%- quizzes, tests, and papers
Grading formula for semester grade:
1st Nine Weeks 37.5%
2nd Nine Weeks 75% 9 weeks average, 25% EOC
Reading Requirements
You will be required to read novels in and out of class. For each book you finish, you will
complete a small project from the menu. This makes up two grades, one for completing books
and the other for completing the project. Books containing more than 350 pages will count as
two books.
7 books..100 (A)
6 books..92 (B)
5 books..85(B)
4 books..80(C)
3 books..75(C)
2 books..72(D)
1 book65(F)
I have a fairly large classroom library from which students can check out books. I have not read
every single book on the shelves. I buy young adult literature with wide varieties of themes.
Students and parents should discuss reading material and contact Mrs. Barbree with any
concerns.
