1. Whats the taste detected by the

regions below?

2. State the 2 components which make up the

central nervous system.
3. State the 2 types of nerves.
4. State 5 types of receptors in the skin and their
function.
5. Whats the 2 factors which affect the sensitivity
of the skin?
6. Whats function of the sweat glands in the skin?
7. What is mucus?
8. How can a common cold decrease our sense of
smell?
9. Why is the sense of taste called a chemical
sense?

Sense of Sight
Eyes-sensory organ for sight, sensitive to
light
The eyeball held in a bony socket in the
skull by three pair of muscles. Muscles
control movement of eyeballs.
The eyelids and eyelashes keep dust and
dirt out of the eyes.
When we blink, the eyelids wipe tears
over the eyes, keeping them moist and
clean and bacteria free.
Tears contain chemicals that kill bacteria

Part

Function

Sclera

Protects and gives shape to

the eye

Choroid

Black Pigmented layer that

absorbs light and prevents the
reflection of light in eye.
Detects light stimuli and
produces nerves impulses to
be sent to the brain
Refracts light onto the retina

Retina

Cornea

Conjunctiva Protects the cornea

Part

Function

Iris

Controls the size of the pupil

Pupil

Controls the amount of light

entering the eye

Eye lens

Focuses light so that an image

form on retina

Ciliary body
(Ciliary
muscle)
Suspensory
ligament

Contrasts and relaxes so that

an image form on the retina
Holds the eye lens in its
position

Vitreous
Humour
Yellow spot

Blind spot

Optic nerve

Function
Helps to refract light and helps to
focus the image onto the retina
Helps to maintain the shape of the
eyeball
The most sensitive part on the
retina to light
Detects light or images that fall on
it and converts them into nervous
impulses
The part that is not sensitive to
light
Any image formed here is not
detected
Carries nervous impulses from the
retina to the brain to be interpreted
