1) The Chinese zodiac is a cycle of 12 years. Each sign
is about 1 year long. Zodiac is based on a lunar
calendar.
2) There are 12 animals which include the rat, ox, tiger,
rabbit/cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat/sheep, monkey,
rooster, dog and the pig. The Buddha invited the
animals to participate in a race. The first 12 animals to
cross the river would appear on the Chinese zodiac
calendar in the order in which they completed the race.
The rat cheated in order to win the race.

1) The Western zodiac is a cycle of 12 months. Each

sign is about 1 month long. Zodiac is based on a solar
calendar.
2) There are 12 star signs which include: Aries, Taurus,
Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio,
Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. The 12
signs of the Western zodiac are based on Greek
constellations.

3) There are five Chinese elements.

3) There are four Western elements.

4) The sign is has a fixed element and a fixed ying or

yang orientation. There is also an element that varies
from lunar cycle to lunar cycle creating a sixty year
cycle (12 signs x 5 elements).

4) The sign has a fixed element and a fixed sun sign.

Celestial bodies aside from the Sun such as the planets
form complex patterns that modify the influence of the
sun sign.

5) Compatibility is easy to figure out. There are four

triangles of affinity in the wheel above. You also are
not compatible with your wheel opposite. For example
a rooster is not compatible with a rabbit.
