Needs Assessment
1.

What is the learning problem or opportunity? The university offers many

types of learning for many different job types. The learning problem is
that there is nothing that encompasses health care or that type of
industry. There will always be a need for health care as there will always
be sicknesses and aid for publics health.

2.

What is currently available? Northwest Valley Community College

actually does not offer any health care programs at all. They carry the
basics to fulfill other types of basic job opportunities with the exception of
health care.

3.

What should be available? In addition to the curriculum that is currently

offered, there should be a health care administration degree and a
degree that offers students the start of a nursing degree. Both are
needed- as there is direct patient care and indirect patient care needs.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 2

Continued Needs Assessment

4.

Explain the gap analysis between what is available and what should be
available. There will always be a need for an education degree. This
degree is an opportunity for future teachers to teach our children and
future adults. There will always be a need for a criminal justice program
as there will always be a need due to the crime that is still being
committed. Last but not least- the one that is missingHealth Care.
There will always be sickness and there will always be a need to assist in
the health and wellness of the public.

5.

What is your recommended solution for filling the gap? Add a degree
program that would assist in the aid of students fulfilling the health care
field. One portion is in regards to the administration program and the
other is in regards to the beginning stages of be coming a nurse. Both
programs are very much needed in order to run the office and aid in the
patient care.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 3

Instructional Goal
What should the learners be able to do after successfully
completing this instructional plan? Once the degree is
complete, students should be able to accurately understand
medical terminology and legally keep patient records in tact.
In addition to successfully manage an office.
Remember, the instructional goal helps measure whether or
not the desired learning outcome has been achieved.
Medical terminology is far different than the language in a
regular business office; there are far more legalities that need
to be recognized and upheld in a medical office over a normal
office of business. Insurance and keeping files clean and
organized is very important as there are third party people
involved including patients needs.
Instructional Plan Template | Slide 4

Instructional Goal continued

In addition, the goal establishes the learning objectives and
assessment of the instruction. Test files and mock set up
of an insurance company will give an in-depth
understanding of how to keep and organize files correctly,
run an office and understand the any type of medical
terminology. Student learners will have the confidence of
running the office. Doctors have a lot on their plate
already, keeping the administration side of the office will
only enhance and help the office run smoothly.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 5

Performance-Based Objectives
A: Future health administration students will be the learner.
B: Expected measurable behavior consist of understanding the
legality of the upkeep of medical files. While understanding the
legality of things, the learner will also understand how to run the
business side of the office. The upkeeps of files will have
accurate terminology and patients will be able to trust that they
will be taken care of.
C: Mock files can be presented for students to organize and
mock insurance company can be called to set up the insurance
in the files for the patients. In addition to, in the management
portions of the class, psychology must be presented as
management is also understanding other persons behavior.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 6

Performance-Based Objectives
continued
D: Doctors office or medical facilities or hospitals are fast
pace and there is no room for error. Both doctors and
patients rely on the administration side to make sure that
those errors are not made. Having a complete
understanding of health administration will only enhance
the office quality and help the office run more efficient.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 7

Summative Assessment and Learning

Outcomes
The course must meet the demands of the of the industry as well as the meet the needs
of the employer.
In these classes and degree, the student must have the knowledge of both office
management knowledge as well as the understanding of the health care field.
Language of the health care field
How to process insurance claims and set up insurance claims.
Understand the psychology of patients and manage staff effectively.
Keep the legality of files in good condition and meet the needs of both patient and
doctors.

The Summative Assessment is to prove the worth of the classes and

how well a student is able to retain the information and learned
material through the class and instruction. The learned details will
outline the end result: the reaction, the learned material, the
behavior and the results themselves. The end result and
assessment should clarify if the retained information given was
actually retained and will be used in future use for the job itself.
Instructional Plan Template | Slide 8

Continue of Summative Evaluation

There are various different types:
Assessment scale:
Strongly agree to disagree
Scale of 1-5, 5 being the best and 1 being the worst.
Asking clear questions that allow for the designer to understand what the learner actually learned and how they will apply
it.
Something to include: How they felt about the instructor and what the instructor can improve upon.

Open Ended Questions

Learning about the strengths and weaknesses
Students can freely add more description to how they felt and what they learned, as well as how they will apply this new
knowledge.

Achievement tests
Multiple choice
Performance test

Keep the assessment anonymous- as this allows the student to free be able to express their
desires, likes and dislikes without judgment

The end result is to have an office staff that will not only man the office but be able
to help the patient with all their needs. This also means that the client (insurance)
that provides the payment for the patient.
The office should run smoothly while the patient is able to get the proper care that is
needed.

Learner Characteristics
General Characteristics

Education does not discriminate on age; however, the school and its advisors must
be realistic with the demands of the job and what the job entails. This includes
being able to work in a fast paced environment, being able to carry conversations,
carry files and understand how to file documents/simple office work. Work
experience is always a plus; however, training on the job training will be helpful.
Most states do not discriminate against, age, sex, origin, face, culture.

Specific Characteristics

During the course work through the degree, a student will have already taken some
general education classes that taught the student about cultural diversity, critical
thinking, writing, and basic professional skills
Core classes will enhance the above information as well as teach the student about
the basic skills of a health care administrator. Assessments and tests would be
able to prove that the student did in fact retain information learned from the
classes and degree program.
Mock offices and set up of a medical office with mock files and insurance details
will let the student learn the what to dos and the what not to dos

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 10

Continue of Learner Characteristics

Learning Styles

Internship in medical and hospitals will allow a student to follow a professional and see and do what
they were also trained to do.
There are many types of learners

Visual

Write it

Auditory

Say it

Kinesthetic

Demonstrate it

What are the implications to your instructional plan based on these

characteristics?

Being that students are not cookie cutter students, an instructor must be able to adapt to the learner.
This allows the learner to be able to learn at their skill level. However, an instructor still needs to
challenge the learner in all areas as they will be tested in real life in all areas. In that case the
student must also learn to adapt to the material so that they are will diverse in all situations.
With all age groups and cultures and whatnots- the students can decide if this is the degree for them
and decide if they will be able to handle the load that they are getting into. Along with the
internships and learned material, the student can have a better understanding of the industry and
what it takes to have that career.
Instructional Plan Template | Slide 11

Learning Context

Setting

In class school setting, where there will be class discussion, lectures, videos,
and tests

Open discussion and test can be taken.

Books materials and visual aids- can be effective for students to see actual
documents and examples of documents

Videos of examples of an office set up, will open discussion and help with
the understanding of the dynamics of the office setting

Mock classroom set up as an office would be, as well as web-based learning

tutorials

Open discussion as to the set up and mock files to view, prep, and set up
for billing and for legal work

Web-based tutorials for all learning types to be able to learn and retain

Internship- where students actually are at an office and will work with real
people and real doctors/patients.

Start putting the picture together

Adding in the real life scenarios and applying all the learned materials
together
Instructional Plan Template | Slide 12

Delivery Modality
Most of the learning in the class should be led by an instructor as there are certain
points that need to be presented and led by an instructor. However, there are some
assignments and lessons that can be web-based and self paced, type lessons.
Each type of learning will allow for the each of the other students to be able to use
the style of learning that best suits them.
It also helps get students out of their comfort zone of learning types and to learn
other types so that they can be included in the other lessons that are not at their
comfort level.
Some of the lessons can be group discussion and lecture type lessons. The group
discussions allow for openness of ideas and talking about the experiences that
others have had.
In the end of the program, a student should be able to have one on one experience
so that the student can get the full effect of what the job entails.
Through a combination of different types of styles of teaching and tools that an
instructor can use- each student is able to take something out of the course and
degree as they advance into their career.
Internship is the final chapter in the degree.
Instructional Plan Template | Slide 13

Instructional Strategies
The overall plan governing the instructional content (the information to be taught) and process (how will it be taught).
Each week there should be a variety of types of learning material and types of instruction to satisfy each type of
learning for students. All lessons should be clear and concise to where the student will know and understand
what and how that class will affect them at their everyday job that they will be able to obtain after their degree.
Select instructional strategies that will be used to facilitate instruction, and explain the main concepts that the learner
will need to understand in order to master this topic.
Open discussion and lecture will a part of the class. Having open discussion will allow students to discuss the
topics learned and the topics that they may have experienced already. Instructor led conversation as well as
note taking will allow students to go back to notes to refresh their memory. Web-based tutorials and video
technology will assist in this area as well.
Utilizing a strategy such as gaining the knowledge of what a student is starting with, what they are starting to
learn and what they learn afterwards- will help the instructor understand where the student is starting at in their
class and what they will need to learn while in class.
Help student find a buddy for class. While life happens, students cannot help when life happens this allows the
buddy to help while out of the class and in use for student study sessions.
For time in class- where students must learn body parts and insurance terms or health care terms- note taking
and note cards for memorization will help.
Group teams and learning or team papers or projects will help students collaborate in the classroom.
Anytime a lesson is made fun- there is room for imagination and laughing- which helps student with fun and
learning create games or even song to help with defining and memorizations- and the reasoning behind the
information learned.
Internship and mock class offices will allow student to learn the day to day details of the learned materials
learned in class.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 14

Plan for Implementation

In class

Three times a week at least 2-3 hours of instruction, lecture, class discussion, group
and team in addition to individual learning
This program is set up the same as a normal degree- An associates, bachelors or
masters- are very similar to a normal school semester schedule.
2-3 years for associates
4-6 years for bachelors
6-8 years for masters

Online

The class is available 24/7- asynchronous learning. Discussion questions,

participation, papers, PowerPoint and fill in sheets. Team work and individual work
required
Video, web base tutorials, reading
Associates 2 years
Bachelors 4 years
Masters 5-6 years- depending on the concentration.

Both types of classes can have guest speakers- by video and in person

Books are provided by the facility- however, bought by student.

All other materials will be provided for student

Extra curricular items will need to be provided by student- such as note cards and queue cards.

Both classes will have test or exams along with papers or presentations

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 15

Instructional Resources
Various books for each class that student can use for research and learning
Computer- for web-based tutorials and web based lessons. (both modalities)
For the online student- they will need to have a computer that they provideand they must have the proper programs on their computer for the class- they
must have a signed agreement that they will have these computers in good
working order and with programs.
For internship- they must have the proper clothing to be at the job
Must meet the grooming of the office
Such as clean shaved, groomed hair (out of face and with hat or not)
Walking shoes or nurse shoes
Uniform

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 16

Formative Assessment
Clarify the materials, keep the materials easy to understand
This will help in the evaluation of the class- where the student is clear on the lessons and will be able
to apply this information

Effective class discussion and lecture

This will allow open conversation where students can learn from others and learn from the experience
of others. Students can take notes and use notes to learn for memorization of items
Open discussion will also allow students that are shy or are more of a visual learner- learn from others

Feedback from students

This will help the instructor learn what students are taking away from the class.
This will also help in future classes to ensure that the students are actually taking away lessons and
using them for the career.

Group learning
Group learning creates collaborative team work- which is a huge asset to office and managerial work.
When students are learning to communicate in a large office, there is less confusion and more
effective work. Empower students to recognize what they are learning and help them become
problem solvers and solution providers.

Individual learning
Self learning- Learning from the reading and experience that they learn on their own.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 17

Evaluation Strategies

Students will be able to take surveys throughout the program; multiple choice as to
what they feel that they are taking from the program. This will help the instructor
learn what the students are lacking what they are gaining.
Tests will reveal what is actually learned from research- but after the test, a student
can engage in acting out the lessons and what it will be like in the field. This can
either be done through groups or individual. Mid-term exams can be used as well to
get an idea of the students understanding and what they are taking away from the
lessons- how the future lessons can be adjusted as the class resumes.
Guest speakers can participate to speak to the students and ask questions to the
guest. Afterwards, there can be a take away type essay as to what the student has
taken away from the guest speaker and what the student has gained from the speaker.
At the end of the course, the students can fill out a questionnaire as to what the
course is lacking, what the instructor did well or can improve upon and what they
hoped to have learned in the class.
Staff can sit with the class during the lecture to learn what the instructor is lacking.
Staff can sit with the group and team projects so that they are aware of the groups
progress or assistance.
Staff should visit doctor offices and hospitals to adjust the curriculum so that they can
adjust the lessons and the instructor can teach to the job and career as well as the
required curriculum from the state board.
Instructional Plan Template | Slide 18

Outcome Review
When students understand the objective and the
expectations of the assignment and or lesson- the student can
use that as a guide to do the assignment correctly. (2
examples)
Rubric- is a step by step of the expectation of what the assignment
entails.
Log in to XYZ website, gives the word limit, directions of what to use for the research, has
questions that needs to be answered in the paper/project/PowerPoint.

Likert scale- allows for students to agree or disagree with statements that
will enhance the future learning and the current learning the student just
received.
Clear question or comment that the student can answer using below statements
Strongly agree/ agree / Dont know / Disagree / Strongly Disagree
Possibly use anonymous surveys or questionnaire- so that the survey is not squewed

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 19

Recommendations
Based on the (made up mock school) school and what it offers to future students, the
Health Care Administration program will be an enhancement to the school; however, a
greater advantage to the soon to be student that is looking to have a career in Health
Care.
The school will have a program that will only allow more students to attend with the
bright future ahead of them as they are looking to help in an industry that is needed.
In most colleges, there must be a standard set of programs that satisfy the areas
around it.
Criminal Justice
Health Care
Teaching/Education
These programs are needed and a necessity where there is crime, future educators and sickness
There is not any getting around this three issues that almost all cities and states have.

The industry and state boards as well as the students and faculty should be used in
the sense that they will help and shape the opportunity of the future graduates of this
program.
Students that graduate will have a hands on experience as learn all facets of the job
that are entailed in the job descriptions of the job placements packets that are
provided at the time of hire.
