Introduction
Ifyouweregiventheresponsibilityofpaintingaroom,howwouldyouknowhow
muchpainttopurchaseforthejob?Ifyouweretoldtopurchaseenoughcarpetto
coverallthebedroomfloorsinyourhome,howwouldyoucommunicatetheamount
ofcarpetneededtothesalesperson?Ifyouhadtoplaceanorderfornewshingles
fortheroofofyourhome,howwouldyoudeterminethenumberofshinglesneeded?
Asidefromthefactthateachofthesequestionsdealswithhomeimprovement
issues,theyallcenterontheconceptofarea.

Areadescribesthemeasureofatwodimensionalsurface.Oneexampleofhow
areaisusedinengineeringisthecalculationofstressthatdevelopsinanobjectthat
issubjectedtoanexternalload.Ifyouhaveeverstretchedarubberbandtothe

constantcrosssectionalarea.Indoingso,youcausedstresstobuildupinsidethe

efforttocrossacreek,thenyouhaveexperiencedtheconceptofdeflection.Ifthe

sevenwordproblems.Usethenotescontainedinyourengineeringnotebooktohelp
youperformthenecessarycalculations.Calculatoruseisencouraged,butyoumust
showallofyourwork.
