An acceptoble stresssirain curve (see Fig. 1) given in Fig. 20 of the Code will form the basis for the design aids in this ication, The compressive strength of con- rete inthe structure is assumed to be 0°67 fs. With a value of 1°5 for the partial safety Joctor a for material strength (3.4.2.1 oft the Code), the maximum compressive stress in concrete for design purpose 1s 0-445 fx (eee Fig. 1). 14 STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONSHIP FOR STEEL ‘The modulus of elasticity of steel, Es, is taken as 200 000 N/mm (4.6.2 of the Code). ‘This value is applicable to all types of reinforcing stets, The design yield stress (or 02 petcent proof stress) of steel is equal to fjra. With a value of 115 for ym (35.4.2.1 of the Code), the design yield stress fq becomes 0°87 fy.” The Siresestrain relationship for steel in tension cand compression is assumed to be the same, For mild steel, the stress is proportional ‘to strain up to yield point and thereafter the strain increases at constant stress (see Fig. 2). For cold-worked bars, the stress-strain relationship given in Fig. 22 of the Code will 4 Fig. 1 Design Staess-Stram CURVE FOR ConcreTE STRAW Fig, 2 Stmuss-STRAIN Cunve FoR MiLp STEEL, be adopted. According to this, the stress is proportional to strain up to a stress of 08 fy. Thereafter, the stress-strain curve is defined as given below: Steess Inelastic strain 080 f Nil 0854 00001 0904, 00003 095%, 00007 O95 O01 0 10f, 0.0020 ‘The stress-strain curve for design purposes is obtained by substituting fe for f in the above. For two grades of cold-worked bars ‘with 02 percent proof stress values. of 415 Némm# and 500 N/mm* respectively, the values of total strains and design stresses corresponding to the points defined above are given in Table A (see page 6), The stess- strain curves for these two. grades of cold- worked bars have been plotted in Fig. 3. The momeat of resistance of a doubly reinforced section is thus the sum of the limiting moment of resistaxce Majin. of singly reinforced section and the additional moment of resistince Moy. Given the values (of Mu which is greater than Muyo, the value ‘of Muy can be calculated, May = Mu ~ Meso ‘The lever arm for the additional moment of resistance is equal to the distance between cea of waion mince and ome pression reinforcement, that is (d—d') where is the distance from the extreme compres- sion fibre to the centroid of eompression reinforcement. Therefore, considering, the ‘moment of resistance due to the additional tensile reinforcement and the compression reinforcement we get the following: May = Aaa 081) (4-2) also, Mea = Ache — fo) (4 - @) where Aug is the area of additional tensile rein- forcement, Av. is the area of compression reinforce- ment, ‘fe is the stress in compression reinforce- ment, and Sec is the ve stress in concrete at the level of the centroid of compres- sion reinforcement. ‘Since the additional tensile force is balanced by the additional compressive force, Ave (foe — fix) = Ans (0°87) Any two of the above three equations may bbe used for finding Aye and dee. COMPRESSION MEMBERS 3.1 AXIALLY LOADED COMPRESSION ‘MEMBERS: ‘All compression members are to be designed for a minimum eccentricity of load in two principal directions. Clause 24.4 of the Code Specifies the following minimum evceatri- ty, enis for the design of columns: > subject to a minimum of nia 505 * 3 2em. where is the unsupported length of the column Gee 2413 Bi cobb definition of ‘unsupported a pi te nteral dinetsion ofthe column in the direction under consideration, ‘After determining the ecoentrcity, the section should be designed for combined axial load and bending (Se 3.2). However, as simplii- cation, when. the value of the mininiam ccventricty calculated as above is less than or equal to 005D, 383 of the Code permits, the design of short axially loaded compression _ members by the following equation: Pax 04 fg Ae 067 fy Ase where 7 Pais the axial load (ultimate), ‘dc is the area of concrete, and. “eis the atca of reinforcement. ‘The above equation can be written as, Pwd ja de 4) 4 0004-24 where Ags the gross area of cross section, and iis the percentage of reinforcement, Dividing both sides by 4s, Fa o4sa( - i) +0874 by 04 fx + FOOL ~ O4f0 Charts 24 to 26 can be used for designing short columns in accordance with the above ‘equations. In the lower section of these charts, Py/de has been plotted against ieinforcement’ percentage p for different grades of concrete. If the cross. section of the column is knowa, Py/d can be calculated ‘and the reinforcement percentage read fiom the chart. In the upper section of the charts, Paldg is plotted against P, for various values of Ay. The combined use of the upper and COMPRESSION MEMBERS ower sections would eliminate the need for 4ay calealation, Ths i patina oth as an aid for deciding the sizes of columns ‘at ‘the preininary design st i Ree of multin Example $ Axially Loaded Column Determine the cross section and the reinforcement required for an axially loaded colume with the following data: Factored load 3.000kN Concrete grade M20 Characteristic strength of 415 N/mm* reinforcement Unsupported length of = 30m column, The cross-sectional dimensions required will depend on the percentage of reinforcement, Assuming 1-0 percent reinforcement and referring to Chart 25, Required cross-sectional area of columo, ‘4g = 2700 cmt Provide a section of 60 x 45cm. Area of reinforcement, Ay = 10x 2X45 = Ze We have to check whether the minimum cocentricity to be considered is within 0-05 times the lateral dimensions of the column. In the direction of longer dimension, ; 1D aio = oy + a =I 5 B06 420— 260m 01, eia!D = 26/60 = 0-043 In the direction of the shorter dimension, 30 x10, 45 a fan a + 5g = OS+ 15 =21 om 0, ata = 21/45 om 01047 ‘The minimum eccentricity ratio is less than 005 in both directions. Hence the desiga of the section by the simplified method of 38.3 of the Code is valid. 32 COMBINED AXIAL LOAD AND UNIAXIAL BENDING As already mentioned ia 3.J, all com- pression members should be ‘desigoed for 99 5.0 nae an AO, OD 2-0. The Charts for the latter case have been for a section ‘with 20 bars equally distributed on all sides, but they can be used without significant error for any other number of bars (greater ‘than 8) provided the bars are distributed equally on the four sides. The Charts for circular section (Charts 51 to 62) have been prepared for a section with 8 bars, but they can generally be used for sections with any number of bars but not less than 6. Charts have been given for three grades of steel and four values of a’/D for each case men- tioned above.
