Do net expose them to the csk of damage by withdrawing modules unnecessarily. Each module incorporates the highest practicable protection for its semiconductor devices. However, if it becomes necessary to withdraw a module, the following precautions should be taken to preserve the high reliability and long lifa for which the equipment hos been designed ond manufactured. 1. Before removing @ module, ensure that yau are at the same electrostatic potential as the equipment by touching the case. 2. Handle the module by its hentplate, Frame, or edges of the printed circuit board. ‘Avoid touching the electronic components, printed circuit rack or connectors 2. Do not pass the madule to any person without firs ensuring hat you are both at the some electrostatic potential. Shoking hands achieves equipotentl. 4, Place the module on an antistatic surface, ar on a conducting surface which is at the same tential as yourself. 5. Store or transport the module in @ conductive bag. ‘More information on safe working procedures for ail elecronic equipment can be found in BSS783 and IEC 147-0F. IF you ofe making measurements on the internal elecronic circuitry of an equipment in sorviee, it preferable that you are earthed to the casa wih o conductive wris sap. ‘Wrist stops should have a retistance fo ground between 500k — 10M ohms. Ifo wari! sirop is not ‘voilable, you should maintain regular contact with the case to preven! the build up of static. Instrumentation which may be used for making mecsurements should be earthed to the casa whenever possible. ALSTOM T&D Frotection & Cantrol Ud skongly recommends that detailed investigations on the electronic circuitry, or medification work, should be carried out in o Special Handling Area such as described in 855783 of IEC 147-0F TYPES: . Explanation of symbols and labels The meaning of symbols and labels which may be used on the equipment or in the product documentation, is given below. A uN Caution: refer to product documentation Caution: risk of electric shock Functional *earth terminal. Nate: this symbal may clso be used for @ protective/ sofety earth terminal it that terminal is part of a terminal black or sub-assembly eg. power supply. *Note: The term earth used throughout the product documentation is the direct equivalent of the North American term ground, Installing, Commissioning and Servicing Equipment connections Personnel undertaking installation, commissioning or servicing work on this equipment should be aware of the correct working procedures to ensure safety. The product documentation should be consulted before installing, commissioning or servicing the equipment. Terminals exposed during installation, commissioning and maintanonce may present a hazardous voltage unless the equipment is electrically isoloted. If there is unlocked access to the rear of the equipment, care should be taken by all personnel fo avoid electric shock or energy hazards Voltage ond current connections should be made using insulated crimp terminations to ensure that terminal block insulation requirements are maintained for safety. To ‘ensure that wires are correctly terminated, the correct crimp terminal and tool for the wire size should be used. Before energising the equipment it must be earthed using the protective earth terminal, or the appropriate termination of the supply plug in the case of plug connected equipment. Omitting or disconnecting the equipment earth may cause a sofety hazard. The recommended minimum earth wire size is 2.5°mm?, unless otherwise stated in the technical data section of the product decumentation. Before energising the equipment, the following should be checked: Voltage rating ond polarity; CT circuit rating and integrity of connections; Protective fuse rating; Integrity of earth connection (where applicable) Equipment operating conditions ‘The equipment should be operated within the specified electrical and environmental lirits Current transformer circuits Do net open the secondary circuit of a live CT since the high voltage produced may be lethal to personnel and could damage insulation. External resistors Whore external resistors are fitted to relays, these moy present a risk of electric shock ‘or burns, if touched. Battery replacement Where internal batteries are fitted they should be replaced with the recommended type and be installed with the correct polarity, to avoid possible damage to the equipment. Insulation and dielectric strength testing Insulation testing may leave capacitors charged up to a hazardous voltage. At the end of each part of the test, the voltage should be gradually reduced to zero, to discharge capacitors, before the test ads are disconnected. Insertion of modules and peb cards These must not be inserted into or withdrawn from equipment whilst itis energised, since this may result in damage. Fibre optic communication Where fibre optic communication devices ore fitted, these should not be viewed directly. Optical power meters should be used to determine the operation or signal level of the device. Older Products Electrical adjustments Equipments which require direct physical adjustments to their operating mechanism to change current or voltage settings, should hive the electrical power removed before making the change, to avoid any risk of electric shock. Mechanical adjustments The electrical power to the relay contacts should be removed before checking any mechanical settings, to avoid any risk of electric shock. Draw out case relays Removal of the cover on equipment incorporating electromechanical operating elements, may expose hazardous live parts such as relay contacts. Insertion and withdrawal of extender cards ‘When using an extender card, this should not be inserted or withdrawn from the ‘equipment whilst it is energised. This is to avoid possible shock or damage hazards. Hazardous live voltages may be accessible on the extender card. Insertion and withdrawal of heavy current test plugs When using a heavy current test plug, CT shorting links must be in place before insertion or removal, to avoid potentially lethal voltages. Decommissioning and Disposal Decommissioning: The auxiliary supply circuit in the relay may include capacitors across the supply or to earth. To avoid electric shock or energy hazards, after completely isolating the supplies to the relay (both poles of any de supply, the capacitors should be safely discharged via the externat terminals prior to decommissioning. Disposal; It is recommended that incineration and disposal to water courses is avoided. The product should be disposed of in @ safe monner. Any products containing batteries should have them removed before disposal, taking precautions to avaid short circuits. Particular regulations within the country of operation, may apply to the disposal of lithium batteries. Technical Specifications ~ The recommended maximum rating of the external protective fuse for this equipment is 16A, GEC Red Spot type or equivalent, unless otherwise stated in the technical data section of the product documentation. Section 1, SETTINGS The operating current, os a proportion of relay rated current, is set by a plugbridge onda 1 x to 2 x mukiplier potentiometer. Thus the current setting is continuously variable between | x the lowest tap setting and 2 x the highest tap setting; eg. to achieve a setting of 0.72 x rated current on a relay with plugbridge taps of 0.2 x, 0.4 x, 0.8 x ond 1.6 x rated current, select the 0.4 x tap and set the mulipi potentiometer to 1.8 x. 0.4 x 1.8 = 0.72 x rated current, Note: Relay type MCTI 19 is a single phase device. Relay type MCTI 39 is a three phase device with a common output element for all three phases. Relay type MCTI 40 is a three phase device with individeal output elements for each of the three phases. Section 2. INSTALLATION 21 22 General Protective relays, although generally of robust construction require careful treatment prior fo installation and a wise selection of site. By observing a few simple rules the pest of of premature failure is eliminated and a high degree of performance can This equipment requires a protective (safely) earth connection to ensure user safely. The relays are either despatched individually or as part of a panel/rack mounted assembly, in cartons specifically designed fo protect them from damage. Relays should be examined immediately they are received to ensure that no damage has been sustained in transit. If damage due to rough handling is evident, a claim should be made immediately to the transport company concerned, and the nearest ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control representative should be promptly notified. Relays ‘which ore supplied urmeunied and net intended for immediate intolaon should be retumed to their polythene bags. Unpacking Care must be taken when unpacking and installing the relays so that none of the parts are damaged or their setings cltered, and they must ot all mes be handled by skilled persons only. Relays should be examined for any wedges, clamps or rubber bands necessary to secure moving parts to prevent damage during transit; these should be removed after installation and before commissioning. Relays which have been removed from their cases should nat be left in situations where they are exposed to dust or damp. This particularly applies to installations which are being carried out at the some time as constructional work. Storage IFrelays are not installed immediately upon receipt they should be stored in a place free from dust and moisture in their original cartons and where dehumidifier bags have been included in the packing they should be retained. The action of the de- humilfier crystals wil be impaired i We bag has been exposed fo ombient conditions and may be restored by gently heating the bag for about an-hour prior to replacing it in the carton. Dust which collects on a carton may, on subsequer unpacking, find its way into the relay; in damp conditions the carton and packing may become impregnated with moisture and the de-humidifying agent will lose its efficiency. Storage temperature ~25° fo +70°C. 24 Site The installation should be clean, dry and reasonably free from dust and excessive vibration. The site should preferably be well illuminated to facilitate inspection. ‘An outine diagram is normally supplied showing panel cutouts and hele centres. For individually mounted relays these dimensions will also be found in Publication Publication R7012 is a Parts Catalogue and Assembly Instructions. This document will be useful when individuel relays are fo be assembled as a composite rack or pane! mounted assembly. Section 3. COMMISSIONING 3.1 Commissioning preliminaries 3.1.1 Electrostatic discharges The relay uses components which are sensitive to electrostatic discharges. When handling the module, care should be taken to avoid contact with components and electrical connections. When removed from the case for storage, the module should be placed in an electrically conducting antistatic bag. See full recommendations inside front cover. 3.1.2 Wiring Check that the internal wiring is correct to the relevant relay diagram or scheme diagram. The relay diagram number appears inside the cosa. Particular attention should be poid fo the correct wiring and value of any external resistors indicated on the wiring dicgrom/relay rating information. Note that shorting switches shown on the relay diagram are fitted internally across the relevant case terminals and close when the module is withdrawn. It is essential that such switches are fitted across all CT circuits. Ifa test block type MMLG is provided, the connections should be checked to the scheme diagram, particularly that the supply connections are to the “LIVE” side of the test block (coloured orange) and with terminals allocated with odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, ele). Removing the front cover isolates terminal 13 from 14. 3.1.3 Earthing Ensure that the case earthing connection above the rear terminal block, is used to connect the relay to the local earth bor. 3.14 B15 3.2.1 3.2.2 3.2.3 Insulation The relay, and its associated wiring, may be insulation tested between: ~ all electrically isolated circuits = all circuits 10 earth. - An electronic of brushless insulation tester should be used, having a de voltage not ‘exceeding 1000V. Accessible terminals of the same circuit should be first strapped wapher Deliberate circuit earthing links, removed for the tests, must subsequently be Electrical tests Applicable to all relays involving current transtormers: DANGER: DO NOT OPEN CIRCUIT THE SECONDARY CIRCUIT OF A CURRENT TRANSFORMER SINCE THE HIGH VOLTAGE PRODUCED MAY BE LETHAL AND COULD DAMAGE INSULATION. When type MMLG test block facilities are installed, it is important that the sockets in the type MMLB 01 test plug, which correspond to the incoming current transformer secondary windings, are LINKED BEFORE THE TEST PLUG IS INSERTED INTO THE TEST BLOCK. Similarly a type MMLB O2 single finger test plug must be terminated with an ammeter BEFORE IT IS INSERTED to monitor CT secondary circuits. Commissioning tests Equipment required - Variac ~ Resistor — DC voltmeter to check auxiliary voltage — Double pole switch = Electronic timer - An overcurrent test set with timing facilities can be used as an alternative ‘method for testing. DC auxiliary supply check (Vx) Remove the module from the relay case. In practice on breaker fail schemes the de supply is not applied to the relay until the main protection has operated. It is therefore necessary to link across the protective relay contacts or across the appropriate contacts of the trip relay to apply the auxiliary de supply to the relay terminals. Check for correct polarity and voltage applied. Relay CT shorting switches With the relay removed from its case, check that each CT shorting switch is closed by ing rated current into each phase circuit. The rated current of the relay (IN) is either 1A or 5A and appears on the front of the relay. Alter completion of tesis 3.2 and 3.3 insert the relay into its case. 3.24 3.25 3.2.5.1 3.2.5.2 3.2.6 Current sensitivity checks This test checks the front panel plug tap settings and multiplier potentiometers. Monitor the outgoing contacts of the relay to indicate when relay eperation occurs. Select plug tap to 0.2 ond multiplier to 1.0. - Inject current into A phase and slowly increase the current until the relay operates; note the value of the current. Decrease the current slowly and note the value of current when the relay drops of. The pick up value should be within +5% of setting and the drop off value should be between 95% and 97% of the pick up valve. Select the plug tap to 1.6 and multiplier to 2. values. Repeat tests injecting in B and C phases. Operate/reset timing and contact operation Operate time Repeat the tests, noting current Inject current at 2x setting into A phase via a double pole switch, one pole to initiate « timer on closing. Connect relay output contacts to stop timer on closing. Record operating time. ‘Operating times to be less than 12ms. Repeat fest on B and C phases. Reset time Inject current at 2x setting into ‘A’ phase via a double pole switch, one pole to initiate @ timer on opening. Connect relay output contacts to stop the timer on opening. Record reset time; this should be less than 15ms (typically 12ms). Repeat fest on B and C phases. WARNING: | Reset times may be slightly longer than 12ms due fo arcing when current circuit is opened, and ue 10 diferences between the fime at which the two poles of the switch open. Final checks Remove all test leads, test switches, temporary shorting links etc. Replace any links that have been removed to facilitate testing. IF test plug (MMLB) and test block (MMIG) hove been used remove the test plug. CAUTION: Replace the tes! block cover fo put the protection in service. 12 Section 4, MAINTENANCE 4 42 Periodic maintenance is not necessary. However, periodic inspection and testis recommended, Visval inspection Isolate all supplies and withdrow the module from the case using the two black handles on the relay. Inspect the printed circuit board for any sign of loose components or connections. Your attention is drawn to the fact thet the relay can be damaged by electrostatic discharges. The pcb should not be touched unless precautions have been taken. Functional checks Periodic functional tests should be carried aut using the test procedures shown in Section 6. The operation of the flag and the reset mechanism should be checked during these functional tests. Section 5. PROBLEM ANALYSIS 51 52 It's recommended that faully printed circuit boards are replaced as a unit and no attempt made to remove or change components on them. This is because the protective coating on the board is degraded by altempting fo solder through it. These instructions do not, therefore, go inio sufficient detail to permit the identification of faulty components at printed circuit board level Removal of the relay from its case To remove the relay from its case, loosen the caver screws and remove the cover. The relay can now be withdrawn from its case by pulling on the handles. Inspect the wiring and components visually for signs of damage or poor connections. Current transformer and plugbridge check Remove each CT secondary {red and black wires) in tu from the appropriate pcb terminals; connect an ac milliammeter between the red and black wires and measure the CT secondary current when rated current is applied to the appropriate relay terminals as detailed in the following table.
