Lesson Plan Format: Math 7-1

Teacher___Ms. Boone_____________________
I.

Grade Level___2nd grade_________

Content and Standards: Standards for this lesson are aligned with the content, the
text and materials.
CC.2.1.2.B.2 Use place value concepts to read, write, and skip count to 1000

II.

Prerequisites: State the understanding and knowledge that is necessary for this
lesson.
Know how to count
How to use a calulator

III.

Essential Questions (provide a framework)

How do I count by 2s, 5s, and 10s?

IV.

Instructional Objective: Indicate what is to be learned and what you will teach- this
must be a complete objective. Write this objective in terms of what an individual
student will do.
To review counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s; to extend this to counting by any number n
and to provide experiences with describing patterns that result from counting.

V.

Instructional Procedures: BDA Description of what you will do in teaching the

lesson, and, as appropriate, includes a description of how you will introduce the
lesson to the students (Before), what actual instructional techniques you will use
(During), and how you will bring closure to the lesson (After). Include what specific
things students will actually do during the lesson. In most cases, you will provide
some sort of summary for the students.

The teacher will give the students a math message. The math message for today is
having the students count by 2s as far as they can. The teacher will then ask the
students to count by 2s starting at certain numbers and she will switch it up a few
times. The teacher will ask students for the pattern they may notice when they are
counting by 2s. The teacher will then ask the students to count by 5s and 10s. The
teacher will point out patterns for those too.
Next the teacher will have the students skip count on a calculator. The teacher will
ask a student to volunteer to recall how to skip count on a calculator. The teacher will
then remind the students how to skip count on a calculator. The students will program
their calculators to skip count. The teacher will have the students skip count by 3s
starting at 22, skip count by 4s starting at 22, skip count by 6s starting at 80, and
skip count by 9s starting at 180. The teacher will pick volunteers to record some of
the counts on the board so the class can observe the patterns in the ones digits. The
teacher will circle the ones digit to help the students.
The teacher will then have the students turn to page 161 in their math journal. The
students will use their calculator to complete page 161. The teacher will explain to the
students what they are to do. The teacher will do number one with the students and
then she will have the students work on the rest on the page by themselves. The
teacher will then go over the page with the students.
VI.

Materials and Equipment: List all materials and equipment to be used by both the
teacher and learner and how they will be used.
Calculators for the students to use
Pencil for the students to write with
Math journal page 161 for students to fill out

VII.

Assessment/Evaluation: Describe how you will determine the extent to which

students have attained the instructional objective. Be sure this part is directly

connected to the behavior called for in the instructional objective. Include rubric
where necessary. CONSIDER PORTFOLIOS AND PRESENTATIONS.
The teacher will observe students while they are using their caluculators to see if they
understand how to skip count. The teacher will observe the students while they are
working on their journal page to see how they do with it. The teacher will have the
students write their numbers on the board of what they get while skip counting on
their calculator.
VIII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities: Indicate how other activities/materials
will be used to reinforce and extend this lesson and for whom. Include homework,
assignments, and projects.
For the students that struggle a little the teacher will pair them up with a stronger
student to work on page 161 together. The students will be given Homelink 7-1 for
homework.
IX.

Technology: Describe which technology will be incorporated and describe how

technology will assist learning.
No technology needed.

X.

Self-Assessment Determine here how you plan to collect information that will be
useful for planning future lessons. A good idea is to analyze the difference between
what you wanted (the objective) and what was attained (the results of the assessment).
The teacher will take notes on any students who are still struggling with counting and
recognizing patterns. These students will be sent out to the hall with the math
assistant to get extra help. The teacher will know to review this again during a math
lesson.
