Sandro Botticelli was one of the

major Italian artists during the
early Renaissance era. He was one
of the leading members of the
circle of artists and scholars which
was sponsored by Lorenzo the
Magnificent. His life was defined by
a large amount of success as he
received the honor by the Papacy,
to paint parts of the Sistine Chapel.

Botticelli demonstrates
Renaissance humanist values
by showing interest in
classical Greco-Roman
antiquity. This is evident in his
notable works such as the
Birth of Venus, Venus and
Mars, and Primavera. He
alludes to Greco-Roman
themes by including
prominent figures of Greek
and Roman mythology in his
paintings.
