EXPERIENCES
(include learner diversity)

Motivation and introduction:

The introduction of the lesson
will be an activity seated on
the mat, focused on using the
interactive whiteboard.

Intercultural
Understanding

During the introduction of the

lesson, the teacher will need to
explain to the students that the
focus of the lesson is the
students names and the
letters in their names.

The teacher will have software

on the interactive whiteboard
when you can get the
whiteboard to speak out what
is written.

The teacher will use this

software or game for the

introduction, where the teacher

will ask each student to write
their name on the interactive
whiteboard, with the teacher
making it speak their name
back to them.

This activity will get the

students motivated about the
lesson and learning about the
letters in their names.

The teacher can end the

introduction by explaining each
activity at the activity tables,
instructing particular students
to go to each table.

Whole class activity on the mat

in front of the interactive
whiteboard.

Activity 1: play dough

This activity is a constant
positive activity in the lesson;
hence this activity does not
include ICT.

Group table top activity. (5 or

so students).

The focus of this activity is

making letters of the childrens
names out of the provided play
dough.

There will be laminated

templates of the childrens
names for the children to find
and make their name out of
play dough.

How many letters

(s,a,t,p,i,n) and there will be
laminated templates of these
letters.

To add to the extension,

students can start to make
things that begin with these
letters, for example a snake or
an apple.

Activity 2: Beebots game

This activity is an ICT activity
including Beebots which are a
programmable floor robot in
which you can program to
move in different directs, by
pressing the arrow buttons
located on the back of the
bees.

Group activity on the mat. (5 or

so students).

In this activity, the children will

sit in a circle and will be asked
to use the Beebots in an
activity where they will
program these devices by
using the arrows to move
towards students whose
names start with particular
letters.

There will be a laminated list of

letters that the students can
look at as a prompt to chose
what letter they will use. For
example a student may say: I
am going to move my Beebot

This activity will need an

Educational Assistant in order
to prompt and direct the
students to ensure that they
stay on task and are assisted
with the ICT device (Beebots)
when necessary.

The ICT is used to support the

topic of lesson: Letters.

Activity 3: iPad App

Reading Jets A-Z:
o The App Reading Jets
A-Z is a powerful way
for children to learn the
letters and sounds of
the alphabet. The App
is designed for children
aged 3-7 years old.

The App has the option

for an Australian and
American voiceover,
which the students or
teachers can select.

Reading Jets A-Z

makes learning fun,
motivating and
enjoyable for children.
It features three
educational games for
each letter, including
letter tracing of
uppercase and
lowercase letters,
identifying sounds with
pictures and memory.

each student, where they will
be asked to practice the letters

games in the App.

It is important that the students

have an Educational Assistant
with this group so that they
stay on task and are practicing
the correct letters.

This activity will help to

reinforce the letters in the
students names, and practice
writing their names in a
different way that is hands on
and fun.

Conclusion: Book Creator

Teacher will have a book made
with all the students names,
sorted by beginning letter.
(iPad app bookcreator)

Teacher will bring the children

back to the mat by saying 1-23-eyes-to-me and instruct the
students to come and sit
quietly on the mat.
The teacher will ask the
students a few questions
about the activities that they
have just completed, reflecting
on the lesson.
The teacher will read the book
to the students and explain
how the names are sorted.

Lesson Steps
This lesson is broken into four
activities; students are divided into
groups and will rotate to a different
activity every seven to ten minutes.
Activity 1: play dough
This Play-dough activity will be
set up on a group table of
approximately 5 students
The students will be provided
with a laminated sheet of paper
that has an upper and lower
case letter of each of the letters
in S,A,T,P,I,N. They can use this
as a template to trace the letters
with play-dough to assist them
with creating the letters.
Early finishes are allowed to
make something that starts with
the letters in S,A,T,P,I,N. For
example: a student may create a
snake for the letter S.

The teacher prior to the lesson
will need to stick around the
room printed words starting
with the letters in S,A,T,P,I,N

Once the students have found
a word or object for each of
the letters, they need to show
the teacher who will then
approve them to start writing.
The students will then need to
write out the letter, and then
list the object/words they found
for each of the letters.
Activity 3: writing practice
Students will practice writing
the letters (in S,A,T,P,I,N) by
sticking materials onto a piece
of paper to trace the letters.

The teacher prior to this lesson
will have created a book with
all the letters in S,A,T,P,I,N on

The teacher can get the
students to help her read the
book, by sounding out the
