Introduction
In an era when skyscrapers are coming up at a fast pace in developed and developing cities, Nagpur
stands testimony to the stark reality of housing the fourth largest slum population in the country.
Nearly 36% of its people live in 446 slum areas.
There are almost 8.58 lakh people living in 1.41 lakh structures in these slums which have poor basic
facilities, according to the figures of City Sanitation Plan (CSP) prepared recently by the Nagpur
Municipal Corporation's health department (sanitation).
The report says that the total slum population of the city is 8,58,983. This comes to about 36% of the
total estimated population of 24,65,067.
The total registered BPL families stand at 99,011. Out of 446 slums, 287 (65%) have been notified.
35% slums have been given facility in the state and municipal schemes while 22 others have been
identified as newly developed slum pockets on the outskirts.
A senior NMC official said that slums generally grow at a conservative annual rate of 5%. However, in
the last 10 years, there has been a considerable growth of slums in city. The total population, according
to slum master list prepared in 1997 by NMC, was 3,65,216. This was 30% of the present slum
population. In the NMCs' master list for 2002, the slum dwellers constituted 40% of Nagpur's total
population, showing a 10% increase since 1997.

According to the data collected by city development plan (1971-1991), there were
only 47 slums in 1971. The number increased to 326 in 1992. The recent survey
showed 446 slums in 10 zones situated in different parts of the city.
