Imperialism is a policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining
control over other areas of world. It occurred between 1500 and 1800. Europeans
established colonies in African coastal region. Nationalism had produced strong. The
industrial revolution made economies stronger as well. During this time, European
industrialized became more aggressive into expanding other lands. Imperialism was
mostly focused mainly in big cities of africa. Many cities had been weakened by slave
trade.

Imperialism caused many changes. Western culture continued to influence much of the
world. Transportation, education and medical care were improved. Many economies
were independent. Large numbers of African came under European rules. South africa
was populated at the time when European arrived. In my opinion, The great Britain had
most effect on imperialism . They tried to take over so many countries.

The industrial revolution gave European nations the ability to colonize in Africa. By
1922, Great Britain covered almost a quarter of earths total area. Nigeria was officially
colonized on January 1. 1901 when it became a part of British Empire. Like so many
other modern African states, Nigeria is the creation of European imperialism. In the late
15th century, Portuguese navigators became first Europeans to visit Nigeria. They soon
began to purchase slaves and produce agriculture. In 1807, The great Britain
abandoned the slave trade. Meanwhile, African started selling palm products, which
were their chief export by the middle of the century. Sir George Goldie gained control of
all the British firms trading on the Niger. In the following years, British established their
rule in Nigeria and controlled economic and political life. The European colonial rule
brought both negative and positive effects. Nigerian lost control of their land and
independence. Millions died because of diseases and some of them were killed. It also
effected on their culture and traditions. On other hand there were also some positive
consequences, like colonialism reduced local warfare, colonies improved sanitation and
provided schools and hospitals. These things were really essential for them. They also
increased railroads, dams, telegraph lines ETC. The economy of Nigeria was actually
based on agricultural. The crops were cocoa, peanuts, corn, rice, yams, soybeans and
rubber. In addition, cattle, goats, sheeps and pigs were raised. Nigeria contains more
historic cultures and empire than any other country in Africa. British went through
complication while taking over Nigeria. Some of the leaders accepted very easily but
some of them rebelled against it.

Basically British gained control through diplomatic and military. They claimed the entire
area of Nigeria as a colony. The Europeans demanded more influence over the political
and social lives of people. They used four form of imperialism.
