Watch the following video clip and respond to the questions below.

Initial responses
are due on Thursday, 3/19, at midnight. Two additional responses to your
classmates are due by Sunday, 3/22, at midnight.

What is your reaction to this video? What did you find interesting and/or surprising?
Be sure to be specific.
I didnt know that there were specific high schools for immigrants like Newcomer
High School, I assumed that most were just integrated into normal student
populations. I found it interesting how the students form St. Lukes were just as
hopeful at the easing racial discrimination as the Newcomer students.
Do you think the teachers' approach of bringing these two groups of students
together is effective? Why or why not?
I think it was a excellent idea. Especially where they had the students start with
letters. Its very easy to connect to someone by telling them about your life on
paper and it eases much of the initial awkwardness. Also having the time to plan out
their responses probably helped the Newcomer Students greatly. I think you could
say that having to bring out these issue is hard for the immigrants but overall I think
its better to have these things out in the open rather than to feel like no one cares
about the difficulties you have to face.
Identify and explain two specific ways that the video connects to the course
material. At least one of these connections must be related to the material covered
in Chapter 5 of Immigrant America.
As mentioned in Immigrant America on pg. 164, immigrants, especially from
disparate origins like that of the Newcomer School come to the United States for a
wide variety of reasons. Some of the St. Luke students expressed surprise at the
reasons the Newcomer student expressed, like the Congo War.
Another Newcomer student mentioned she didnt feel American. This may have
been, as described on pg. 163-164 that when she arrived she felt a disproportionate
level of discrimination and hostility combined with difficulties in adjusting to
American culture and the English language.
