UNIT PLAN TEMPLATE

Unit Title: Chemistry: Exploring Matter

Name:

Melanie Goral

Number of Lessons: 19
Subject:

Time: (in periods)

Science

Grade/Level:

75 minutes
Gr.9/Applied

Rationale: This unit is very important to the Grade 9 applied science course because not only is it apart of the curriculum but it gives the
students a chance to learn about chemistry and possibly open doors in the future to move on to Grade 9 academic science. This avenue will
allow the students realize a possible preference towards chemistry and allow them to enroll in chemistry courses later on in high school.
Overview: This unit will cover three main areas: (1) properties of matter, (2) elements and the periodic table, and (3) chemical compounds.
Properties of matter will focus on the following: substances that are identified by physical and chemical properties, the uses and
understanding of these properties, the use of substances that can have positive and negative effects in daily life, and changes in substances
that can be either physical or chemical. The elements and periodic table area will focus on the following: atoms, elements, periodic table,
metals and non-metals, metalloids, and beneficial and harmful elements. Finally, this unit will explore chemical compounds, which will
focus on the following: chemical compounds, chemical formulae, molecules, decomposed compounds, chemical changes involving oxygen
and chemical compounds that have both positive and negative effects on society and the environment.
Curriculum Expectations: C1. Analyse how properties of common elements and/or simple compounds affect their use, and assess the
social and environmental impact associated with their production or use, C2. Investigate, through inquiry, physical and chemical properties
of common elements and simple compounds and C3. Demonstrate an understanding of the properties of common elements and simple
compounds, and general features of the organization of the periodic table
Prerequisite Concepts and Skills: None
Teacher Preparation Required: Creation of each lesson (lecture, activity, worksheet and laboratory) for each day
Cross-Curricular Connections: Strand A Scientific Investigation Skills and Career Exploration
Extensions to Unit: This unit will be used along with the other units taught by the Mentor Teacher for the students final grade.
Differentiated Instruction (DI): My instructional methods will include spoken lessons, handouts that will be filled out by the students
during lesson, handouts for activities that are to be completed by the students after the lecture as a follow up exercise, laboratory exercises
where the students get a chance to do hands-on work and observe chemistry in action. In addition to those methods, I will also be prepared
to change up my lesson plans depending on how well the students are dealing with the material and activities and if they are struggling. My
approach will adhere to all learning levels in the classroom.
Connections to Social Justice Framework and Student Connection: Chemistry for Grade 9 applied science is basic enough for all
learning levels and is not discriminatory to any race, gender, culture or social status. There is no expectation that students are required to
bring anything to class expect their willingness to better themselves and be self-reflecting on their capabilities as a student learning.
