Unit 1 Europe

Essential Questions
1. How has Europe developed as both individual nations and as a group?
Europe has developed as an individual nation because of its growth of the United
Nations. When the United Nations was created, the group allowed Europe to become more
secure and avoid the risk of another war. The goal of the United Nations was to maintain
international peace and security and act as a mediator in international disputes to ensure
there is not a WW3. As an individual nation they have avoided another major war in Europe
and kept the people safe and allowing them to not worry about another major war breaking
out that could ruin the nation again.
As a group, Europe has developed because they have the European Union and can
have a group for all the nations involved to come together and discuss issues. The European
Union took a while to become the way it is today but it has been working hard to keep all
the nations together. By having 15 member nations, 10 permanent and 5 non-permanent
member nations, they can avoid issues Europe could have as a group. By being a group in
the EU, it allows Europe as a group to have as few forms of government as possible and
keep as many nations as possible in Europe democratic and having a functioning free
market economy.
2. What political, economic and special conditions exist between European
nations due to their individual history?
Between the European nations, there are conditions that exist that make them
different, due to the history of that nation. One special condition is that there are different
ways of government in different nations. In Great Britain, the government is run by the
monarchy, whereas France has a Prime Minister as the head of their government. A nation
like Great Britain will not change its form of government due to the history of the nation,
and if they were to change their government into a democracy, it would change the way the
nation functions as a whole. The nations have different governments but they still function
properly and do not have issues that would force them to change their form of government.
More special conditions between European nations include the religion in each nation
varies from nation to nation due to the history of that individual nation. One example is that
the nation formerly Yugoslavia, which is now 7 individual nations have different religions
depending on the area of the nation. An area like Bosnia, which is mostly made up of Serb
ethnicity, along with Muslims and Croat ethnicity, has a different ethnic makeup and religion
compared to a nation like France, where everyone is mostly French and comes of French
descent. By having special conditions between nations of Europe, it allows for the nations of
Europe to be individual and not all the same in every nation.
