Business Plan

Executive)Summary)!
Excel Audio is a new audio company taking the audio industry by storm. The start up
company is located in Brisbane, Australia and will be operating purely online targeting
the international market. The future is very bright for the company as the Excel Audio
team plans on producing multiple audio devices to resist the harshest environments
that the world has to offer. Audio devices produced for the harsh environments are
very limited and so is the number of companies producing products for this particular
market. For this reason, Excel Audio will be able to excel in this industry, as
competition is very limited.
Excel Audio is currently in its first year of operation and plans to sell up to 2000
products within the first year. A lot of effort is being put into social media advertising
as this can attract a large customer base. Excel Audio is targeting the social media
platforms YouTube, Instagram and Facebook as these have the largest spectrum of
people. To be precise, Excel Audio is targeting athletic individuals who enjoy listening
to music during physical exercise in in the harsh environments including water, snow,
rain and high altitudes.
Excel Audio will be realising the state of the art waterproof audio device; Water
Sounds, in October 2014. Water Sounds has been created to withstand the harshest
aqua environments that the world has to offer. It can be used during any water sports
including swimming, water polo, sailing, canoeing and diving. The product will be
retailed at $60, which is cheaper than 80% of other waterproof devices. What really
separates the Water Sounds from other waterproof audio devices is that it can
withstand a broader environment range then any other audio device can. This means it
can be used anywhere and for a longer lifespan.
The Excel Audio company was founded by Peter Lewis and Luke Meacle. Peter Lewis
is an exceptional Business Manager, being an expert in marketing and finance. He has
worked in important roles including head of marketing, head of finance and business

manager. Luke Meacle is a very talented individual, having a variety of strengths. He is

an expert in communication and will be vital for closing deals for the company. He
served in the army for 9 years and has built vital skills that will be required within the
Excel Audio team.
Within the first year, Excel Audio has a projected profit of over $17,000. The projected
expenses have been overestimated, and the income has been underestimated so this is
the bare minimum. Luke and Peter have put together $10,000, which will be used to
order the first order of 500 products and to put a lease on the warehouse. The
company will require additional fundings up to $20,000 to help cover start up costs.
This will result in a needed $30,000 start up fund, which will easily cover all start up
costs for the first year.
Excel Audio is a company for the future. A niche market is available and the company
has taken the opportunity to provide what the people want. There is no doubt the
company will rise to the top of the Audio industry in the future.

1.1 "Business"Description""
!

Business Name: Excel Audio

Legal Structure: Partnership
Location of Business: Online
Description of Product
The Excel Audio team aims to sell top-level quality audio devices to the athletic
population. The major product within our company is our waterproof earphone, Water
Sounds. They have been styled and designed to withstand the harshest environments
that individuals may encounter during exercise.
Target Market and Customer Types
Excel Audios products have a broad spectrum of potential customers, as our
earphones can perform to a high quality in environments that traditional audio devices
could not perform highly in. Therefore catering to any lifestyle from an extreme rock
climber, professional swimmer or a suit in the concrete jungle.

1.2 "Mission"statement"
!

Excel Audio aims to provide versatile audio designs that will mould future society with
innovative audio devices aiding businesses, athletes and the average person.

1.3"S.W.O.T"Analysis"
Strength

Weakness

Unique product
Additional features on an already
popular product
Quality product
Broadened target market to
conventional audio products

Expected growth
Easily replicated product
Longevity or life span of product

As the product is unique it will attract

With continued growth in the technology

consumers from similar yet inferior

products
Audio devices have been popular
from the inception, be adding
additional improvements this
popularity will follow
Many Expensive audio devices in
the market currently are quite fragile
and often carry a consumer risk of
breakage, with a near indestructible
product this isn't an issue

Opportunities

Threats

Growth in sports audio industry

Product can be further modified to
suit many more tough environments
Growth in technology enabling
further product development
Further social acceptance and use of
this technology

With recent growth in sports based

audio devices, it is likely that it will
continue aiding the promotion and
sales of the product
With further technological advances
it is possible for further expansion of
the product by adding additional
features that will enable use in
different environments
With proper marketing and
promotion the social acceptance of
using such devices as Excel Audios
in more; previously socially
unacceptable situations, like at work.

"

6"
!

Excel"Audio"

available it is foreseeable that the quality

of the product may struggle to maintain
such a large difference when compared
to other products
It is likely that Excel Audio will face similar
replication issue to that of Beats by Dr
Dre. This will affect the name of the
business and overall sales.
With the regular use of the product in
such environments as water, it is possible
that there is the occasional breakage etc

"

Decrease in the music industry

Increase in labour and materials
costs
Other competing business releasing
similar products
New competitive companies
With the increase of illegal music
downloads, it is understandable that
it will be less likely to be sponsored
by major music retailers such as
apple and Beats by Dre.
Increase in labour costs in countries
of production will drive the sales
price of the product up, which will
minimise the planned economic
advantages of the product
Other established companies
releasing further instalments of
similar products, reducing the
possible number of consumers
With new competitors entering the
market, similarly to how Excel Audio
is planning to. It is recognised that
they will in fact bring similar updates
and concepts to the market.

1.4"Business"Objectives"
1.4.1"Objectives"For"Sales/Profitability"and"any"other"Financial"Goals"
!

Over the first year, Excel Audio aims to completely cover the initial start up cost and
the sell the first batch of products (1700 units). This means that in total Excel Audio
will have to have a sales value of $75,000. This goal can be easily achieved, as audio
devices are very popular in todays market. Along with this the Excel Audio Company
will be purely online which will reduce overhead costs.
1.4.2"Objectives"For"Marketing"Positioning"
!

Within the first year Excel Audio aims to have a significant customer base similar to
that of the now multi-million-dollar empire that is GoPro. With similar concepts of
taking a normal device and fitting it out so that it can function in extreme
environments. Due to this factor we expect a similar growth, as our product is a
revolutionary remake of a standard device. Therefore we expect a significant growth in
product awareness.
1.4.3"Objectives"For"Innovation"
!

Over the next 2 years further development of the product will continue, by releasing
further versatile devices suited to different extreme climates and situations; such as
rock tunes which are specifically designed for the adventurous orienteer. The
original wet area device will be further improved, as further advancements in
technology develop, this may look like releasing on ear headphones for sports such as
rowing where the overall size does not affect the performance.

1.5."The"Product/Service"
Excel Audios current primary product is the waterproof earphone. Our waterproof
earphones are designed with the highest quality material to insure maximum protection
from the worlds harshest environments to suit anyones lifestyle and adventures.
Our product would be more desirable by customers as our product is built with firstclass material to give consumers the best audio experience. This means extended use of
the product can be achieved while still maintaining great audio quality. Along with this
the product will be retailed at a much cheaper price compared to other waterproof
audio devices.

2.0"Market"and"Competitor"Analysis
2.1: Current Trends
The audio industry continues to develop very rapidly as mobile phones, computers and
music become more easily available. The industry is definitely on the rise and will
continue to grow for many years to come. This will mean that the Excel Audio
products will be constantly needed and wanted by the general population. Though the
audio industry has been a live for a long time, the waterproof audio device industry is
just starting up. There has been a lot of success surrounding current waterproof audio
industries Life Proof and X-1 Audio. Major audio companies including Sennheiser, Dr
Dre and Sony have made clear predictions that all forms of audio devices will most
likely be waterproof in the future (News.com, 2014). With audio devices becoming a
necessity, this will be a major benefit for our company, as more customers will be
drawn towards waterproof audio devices.

There is a limited amount of competitors for Excel Audio. As the waterproof audio
industry is still developing many companies are still in the start-up phase. Life Proof,
X-1 Audio and H1 Audio were opened in 2011-2012, which is only 2-3 years ago. As
they have only been operating for a short time, this will allow Excel Audio to be
competitive as other companies are still trying to develop a customer base and expand.
Aqua Pac, Sennheiser and Sony are larger companies that have been operating for 3070 years. These companies have developed a strong customer base and are
internationally known. However they have just recently released their waterproof audio
devices so they are still trying to expand their customer base. This will allow Excel
Audio to compete strongly against all companies as the waterproof audio industry is
developing and customers arent fully aware of the availability.

2.4"P.E.S.T.E.L
Factors

Impact on Market

Political

Foreign Imports Tax

Governments can introduce taxes that will increase our running costs
and lower our profits as we plan to maintain a consistent sales price to
customers.

Environmental

Cost of Materials
The cost of materials used to make the product may become more
expensive as that specific resource may become more or less abundant
in the environment.

Socioeconomic

Society's willingness to spend

With Society becoming more aware of the economic situation around
them, they can become less willing to spend money on unnecessary
items such as ours.

Technological

Technological Advancements
As technology becomes more advanced the cost to produce the product
will reduce and make our profit margins greater
With further technological advancements our product can evolve and
improve making further opportunities for sales and enlargement of target
markets.

Economic

Economic stability of society

With societies uncontrollable financial instability, our customers may
become less able to afford our products as they are only classified as a
want and not a need.

Legal

Potential hazards of the product

With the product having to be used in previously impossible
environments (e.g. under water) it is foreseeable that the product may be
misused and cause harm to the customer leading to possible legal
issues.

12" Excel"Audio"
!

3.0"Marketing"Plan
3.1"Product"
3.1.1"What"is"the"Product"
!

Excel Audios main product is a sport based; all in one

audio device that is capable of high quality audio in
previously unattained environments (e.g. water). The
device latches around the back of the users head with a
semi solid band that connects the two earpieces. At the
back of the headband the storage and battery
compartment are housed in a completely sealed
watertight bubble.

3.1.2"Quality"
!

Due to the market features of our product the

quality must and will exceed any other competitors
reputation as the versatile, unbreakable option
compared to the fragile or let down. To help in
this area the latest audio technology will be joined
with stylish clean silicone waterproofing to improve
versatility and practicality. This aspect will keep the
product life cycle on a positive trend as shown in
this diagram.

3.1.3"Sizes"
!

The product will come in one-size fits all with different sized ear buds for the
independent situation of the user to allot maximum comfort and quality of the product
for each user. The headband is made of flexible yet stretchable silicone to allow for any
head size or shape.

3.1.4"Brand"Name"
!

In the beginning it is vital to maintain a high standard to make a name for this
business, so it is vital that all compliant and advice dealt by the customers is moved on
immediately to reduce the likelihood of issues arising later.

3.1.5"Packaging"
!

The product will be packaged in a clear plastic sealed box with the headphones clearly
displayed in the centre similar to that of the packaging of the GoPro.

3.1.6"After"Sales"Service"
!

Excel Audio promotes itself as providing the best customer service available. This
means that we are constantly checking emails and answering phone calls to fulfil our
customers needs. We offer full refunds if the product is faulty or if they are not happy
with the product. We are one of the only companies to offer 24/7 customer service.
No other audio company provides this service.

"

14" Excel"Audio"
!

"

3.2"Place"
3.2.1"Location"
!

The Warehouse is situated at 74 Robinson Road, Virginia. This location is less than 4
km from the Australia post distribution centre in Virginia. This strategic placement will
allow easy shipment and movement of stock from the floor customer. This will also
reduce shipping costs and times creating a better service for the customer.

3.2.2"Inventories""
!

All products will be sold online. Therefore there will be no Flagship store. Rather then
that Excel Audio will be getting an original storage warehouse. This allows for a greater
span of potential customers to access information relating to Excel Audio. For the first
year Excel Audio will be based in Brisbane to minimise the shipping cost (as most of
the targeted customers live in densely populated regions such as this).
The location will be able to hold up to 50,000 units at anyone time. For the first year
stocks will be limited to 1700 units so we dont have to order much stationary. This
protocol will enable initial efficiency, as there is more space to learn in whilst keeping
cash flow going and lowering out of pocket expenses.

16" Excel"Audio"
!

3.3"Price
Looking at competitors in the market we believe a retail price of $60 is acceptable as
multiple other long lasting companies sell their sports based headphones at
approximately $120, this makes us the lowest priced product on the market as well as
the best quality and additional features.
These prices will more than likely grow over the next 2 years as further improvements
and additional features will be added to the original product therefore reasoning an
approximate growth of 20% in retail price.
Other factors that will affect the cost and retail prices of this product include increased
labour and material costs or increase to import tariffs, electronic goods taxes and an
increase in GST.

3.4"Promotion
Excel Audio will promote the product online and public display advertisers
(billboards), as both methods are cheap and effective informing tools. Both these
methods of marketing are categorised under gorilla marketing techniques that have
become propionate.
Online marketing is perfect for Excel Audio as the product sale is solely online. With
effective promotions on Facebook and similar social medias, linking the excel audio
website is simple and effective. This method is also inexpensive and easy to implement
and expand further.
See Appendix (1-2)
Outdoor advertising and Billboard advertising is an appropriate choice for this product
as it reaches many unfocused and bored customers whilst in traffic as the
adventurously themed promotions incite imagination whilst being disengaged. This will
create a positive subliminal connection in the consumer between the product and fun
and adventure.
See Appendix 3

4.0"Operations"Plan
"
4.1"Product"Development""
!

The Water Sound earphones are currently in the introduction stage (seen in the photo
below). The Excel Audio team is currently in the process of advertising the product to
the general public through radio ads, social media and word of mouth. This is being
done because we are a new company. For this reason the current customer base is very
small, as the product is not well known. For this reason an increased amount of effort
is being put into advertising in hope of increasing sales and popularity. A lot of
research is currently being done on competitors and how the Excel Audio team can
surpass their products. Excel Audio is communicating with various marketing and
finance specialists to try and maximize the ways in which the company can grow.
Further research is being done on the different material options for the earphones in
hope of finding a material that is both cheap and extremely resilient to the harsh aqua
environment.

"

18" Excel"Audio"
!

"

4.2"Production"Facilities"
The Excel Audio team has chosen China as the location for production. China has
been chosen as the location for all forms of production as production prices are very
low in China compared to Australia. After visiting China, Excel Audio has found a
manufacturer, Wallytech Electronics Co., LTD. Wallytech Electronics have been
operating since 2008 and provide quality earphones to multiple audio companies such
as Sony and Jetts. Their main warehouse is located in Guangdong, China and has over
70 employees. All forms of manufacturing will be done in China through the Wallytech
Electronics Company. After all forms of manufacturing are done, the Wallytech
Electronics Company will send the products to the Excel Audio warehouse located in
Brisbane. Products will then be packaged at the Excel Audio warehouse and then sent
out to customers through postage.
The average lead-time is 10 days for the product to be manufactured and sent to the
Brisbane warehouse. A further 1-day is needed to package the products and sent it to
Auspot. The average postage time from Auspost to the customers doorstep is 1-3
days. The whole process from manufacturing to the product being in the customers
possession is 12-15 days.

4.3"Logistics"
The Water Sound earphones will be distributed to the customers through postage.
Excel Audio will be partnering with the well-known company Auspost to help
distribute products effectively and efficiently. Auspost has been chosen over other
distributing companies as they provide cost effective postage methods as well as
providing excellent customer service and reliability. The Auspost Company is very
reliable, as they have been operating within Australia for over 200 years. They have
become one of Australias largest and most well known distributing companies and
have received countless amounts of positive feedback from both the general public
and other business partners.

6"Finance"Plan"
6.1"Financial"Forecasts"and"Analysis.""
See appendix for projected profit and loss statements, projected balance sheet and
break-even analysis.
6.2"Sources"and"uses"of"funds""
The business will need $30,000 to start up. This will be used for the various costs
displayed on the balance sheet including stationary, shipping, employee fees and
general administration. The Co-Founders Peter Lewis and Luke Meacle have 10,000
worth of capital that will be used to order the first round of stock and lease the
warehouse for the first 3 months. The following 20,000 will be requested from
investors. If the business is as projected the Excel Audio Company will not be able to
fully repay investors in the first year, as projected profits are $16,000. However it is
expected that the market will grow very rapidly and the full payments will be made in
the second year.

6.3"Risk"Analysis""
There are multiple risks that will be taken during the start up of the Excel Audio
Company. Certain Financial risks include not having a customer base which is able to
sustain costs. If the market does not accept and purchase the product, the funds will
not be met to sustain the company. A second risk being taken is having the products
manufactured in China. This is risky as the company doesnt manufacture the product
themselves and therefore the company cannot monitor the manufacturing process. A
third risk is that in the first year the profit is very minimal so there is a risk that we that
company wont be able to sustain future operations. If the projected profit is not
