STUDENT WORKSHEET FOR ADAPTING GAMES

INTRODUCTION
Who is in your group?
1) Jose
2) Sam
3) Melissa

4) Ana
5) Caelan

Name three exaamples of territorial games

1) Basketball
2) Soccer
3) Hockey

Name some of the characteristics (3) of territorial games

1) Shared playing area
2) Specialized positions
3) Offense and Defensive tactics (ex. offense- get open to receive a pass and defensive- play
man to man coverage)

What are some of the similarities (3) of the games in territorial games?
1) Attempt to score in the other teams end
2) Accumulating more points than the other team
3) Time limit

What are some of the differences (3) of the games in territorial games?
1) Equipment
2) Field
3) Surface

STAGE 1

PLAY THE GAME

A) What will be your playing area? What will be the purpose of each line? Use the space
below or the back of this sheet to illustrate your ideas.
End Zone Boundary: Catching the ball in this designated area
(behind dotted line and within solid black lines) results in1 point.

Hoop: Scoring
(throwing a
ball in the
hoop) outside
the end zone
boundary
(dotted line)
results in 3
points scored.

Center Line: At the beginning of the game and after each point is
scored teams but return to their half of the playing area (this line
separates the two halves).

B) What ball will you use (or other equipment)? Draw it and give dimensions where
possible.

-cones (8-10):
to help mark
end zone
boundary
-rubber ball (1)
-2 hula hoops
(1 per team)

Thick black
lines (game
played half
court):
Boundaries
surrounding
playing area on
all four sides.
Stepping out of
this designated
area results in
loss of
possession of
the ball (ie.
other teams
ball).

C) What will your end zone look like? Draw it.

Each teams end zone will look

like this. The oval represented
a hoop (shooting the ball in
here from behind the dotted
line results in 3 points). The
yellow area represents the end
zone (scoring here results in 1
point).

D) How will you move the ball?

There are no steps or dribbling permitted with the ball, therefore the ball may only move by
passing it (throwing, without the ball touching the ground) to other teammates.

E) What equipment do you need to start your game?

-

2 hula hoops
Tape (to hold hula hoops to wall)
1 rubber ball
8-10 pylons (to help marks off end zone boundary)

F) What is the name of your game?

Ulti-ball

G) What are five of the rules for your game? (include 1 safety rule)
1) You are not allowed to take any steps while in possession of the ball
2) If you drop the ball, the ball is turned over to the opposing team.
3) If there is an interception (ie. opposing team knocks ball to ground), there is a turnover
(team that was attempting to pass the ball will lose possession, even though opposing
team touched ball last)
4) Scoring: 3 points for throwing ball in hoops (from outside designated end zone); 1 point
for catching the ball in the designated end zone.
Safety Rule
5) No contact

H) Is this game challenging? Why?

Yes the game is challenging. Team must work together and communicate well in order to be
successful at this game. Game sense is also required to excel in this game, making it more
challenging.
I) Is this game fun? Why?
Yes this game is fun because there is a lot of involvement from all players. There is not a lot
of standing around because of the quick pace of the game. As soon as one team turns the ball
over, players must quickly to get on defense/offense. It requires participation and teamwork
from all players, helping to create an inclusive environment where everyone is involved.

STAGE 2

ESTABLISH THE GAME THROUGH DEMOCRATIC PROCESS

How did you make decisions in your group?

Together we brainstormed to think of different concepts/ideas for our game. We were very
democratic; whatever ideas had the most people in favour of them are the ideas we chose to
incorporate into our game.
How did you make sure that everyone was included?
We all took turns (going around the circle) to share what ideas we had. From here we all made
suggestions and began design our game.

What do you think is the best way to resolve your differences?

The best way to resolve our differences was to really listen to each others ideas and opinions.
We often agreed easily on topics but when we did not we would compromise. It worked well that
everyone was flexible in their own ideas and opinions; this help make the decision-making
process easier.

STAGE 3
REFINE THE GAME (take a few time-outs during game play and ask the
following questions)

a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)

Does this game flow?

Is it safe for everyone?
Is the game fair for everyone?
Is everyone involved?
It is fun?
It is educated?

If the answer is No to any of these questions, think about changing or adding some more rules.

Were you able to change the rules and regulations satisfactorily? How so?
Yes. After playing our game we added a rule that you must make five passes before attempting to
score. This better allows everyone to participate more often and touch the ball more. We also
changed how many points were scored. At first we thought it would be more difficult to pass the
ball into the end zone, so we had this worth 2 points (changed to 1 point). We originally thought
it would be easier to shoot in the hula hoops to score a point so we had this worth 1 point (which
we changed to 3 points since it was more difficult). Since the number of points by scoring in the
hula hoops is worth more, we added a rule that you had to use a chest pass in order to score. By
doing this, it prevents people from shooting from really far away (this is not the object of the
game; we want everyone involved and working together).

STAGE 4

SHOW CASE ALL THE GAMES

How did your demonstration go?

Our demonstration went well. We had a lot more participants than we did while testing out our
game; this showed us that the rules we adapted were much needed. Everyone seemed to be
participating and having a lot of fun. There were not people standing around, which was good to
see.

What games did you enjoy watching the most?

There were a few games that were variations of capture the flag. These were my favourites to
watch because all participants were very involved and competitive.

Which would you like to try?

Multiple Ball Madness; it looked like a different kind of game (compared to many of the others
that were created) and a lot of fun.

STAGE 5

IDENTIFY OFFENSIVE STRATEGIES 4

How can your team score more points / goals than the opposition? List your ideas or
strategies.
Choose one or two that you are going to focus on (star beside these).

Pass quickly to break away from defense *

Go for the hoop on the wall to score 3 points (compared to just one)
Cut to get open (when you do not have the ball) *
Make fakes/change directions to get open

How do you keep possession of the ball / puck to set up scoring opportunities?

Pivot
Pass to teammates
Short, quick passes

STAGE 8

REFINE OFFENSIVE STRATEGIES

A) What do you need to be able to do (skills) to carry out your group strategy?
Hand-eye coordination (throwing and catching skills)
Transportation skills to get open
Accuracy skills for throwing
B) What can you do to practice these skills?
i.

What is the simplest form of the skill?

Throwing and catching while standing still
Running

How can you make these skills a little more difficult (eg. Increase speed, put one
defense player in)?
Combine catching and running (perform at the same time)
Throwing to a moving target

ii.

iii.

Can you put this skill into a game-like situation? What would this look like?
While running to get open in our game (or other territorial games such as basketball
or football), most often you are not standing still while receiving a pass. Players must
quickly run to get open and often receive a pass while in mid-stride. The player
throwing the ball also has to throw to a moving target during a play like this.

STAGE 9

IDENTIFY OFFENSIVE TRANSPOSITIONAL STRATEGIES

Create a plan that you can use if your team loses possession. This will help your team get in
defensive mode quickly.
When we lose possession all players quickly run back to our end zone. From here we can
regroup and try to prevent the other team from scoring. The most important thing is to
immediately get back into position and not allow the other team to beat us back to the end
zone. We could also have one player always supporting the ball so help teammates out.

STAGE 10

IDENTIFY DEFENSIVE STRATEGIES

How can your team stop the other team from scoring? List your ideas or strategies.

Choose one or two that you are going to focus upon (* beside these).

Play player to player defense (assigned player to cover) *

Play zone defense
Play help defense

STAGE 11

REFINE DEFENSIVE SKILLS

a) What do you need to be able to do (skill) to carry out your group strategy?

Shuffle actively (quickly): following check closely

Utilize peripheral vision
Anticipate/predict pass: utilize game sense

b) What can you do to practice these skills?

i.

What is the simplest form of the skill?

Shuffle directed by coach or in a straight line (ie. a specific pattern)
Mini games to practice game sense and peripheral vision

How can you make this skill a little more challenging? (eg. Increase speed, put one
offensive player in)
Try to mirror a partner shuffling (random, change in directions)
Increase speed while shuffling (or play mini games at a faster speed)
Add more offensive players

ii.

iii.

Can you put this skill in a game-like situation? What would this look like?
Yes, you can play mini games in which an offensive player is attempting to get open
for a pass and the defensive player is trying to prevent the pass from being made (they
must shuffle to stay with the offensive player, use peripheral vision and game-sense,
and anticipate where/when the ball is going to be thrown.

STAGE 12

IDENTIFY DEFENSIVE TRANSPOSITIONAL STRATEGIES

How can your team gain possession from the team with the ball / object?
Create a plan to gain possession.

Put to defensive players on the player with the ball (making it more difficult to make
a pass)
Position yourself (as a defensive player) between the thrower and the offensive player
who is about to receive a pass (cause an interception or turnover)

STAGE 13 CONNECT STUDENTS NEW GAME TO ESTABLISHED NATIONAL

TERRITORIAL GAMES
What similarities are there between your game and _______ game? List them.
Our game is similar to Ultimate Frisbee:

Both have an end zone (which you score a point for catching a pass in this area)
In both games, a turnover occurs whenever the ball falls to the ground
If you drop the ball, the ball is turned over to the opposing team.
If there is an interception (ie. opposing team knocks ball to ground), there is a turnover
(team that was attempting to pass the ball will lose possession, even though opposing
team touched ball last)
Players cannot move when they have possession of the disc/ball
Both are non-contact games

STAGE 14

WHOLISTIC BENEFITS

What health and educational benefits are there to playing your game?

Cardiovascular exercise
Learn to work well with others (teamwork)
Learn to make quick decisions and learn/think on your feet
Allows participants to be creative and develop creative skills (in how to get open, unique
passing, etc.)
Develops communication skills
