Reflection
I believe that Standard 5 is an important standard for highly successful educational leaders.
Being ethical, while at times difficult to document, is vital to building credibility with your
staff, students, and the community as a whole. I also believe that Standard 5 demonstrates
that you have high expectations for all learners and work within your means to control what
falls under your sphere of influence in your building.
My first artifact of standard 5 came from my first day subbing in the office for a vice principal
that was out of the office for training. During my time in the office I met with a variety of
students regarding behavioral issues. While working with the different students I worked to
treat each situation and student in a manner where I focused on the act itself and work to
provide a resolution that was within the scope of school policy that would try to correct the
student behavior in the future rather than only serve as a punitive measure. One specific
case involved a student that was accused of inappropriate contact with another student. I
was in charge of conducting the investigation, taking student statements, and working in
collaboration with another administrator and school resource officer to determine the next
steps in handling of the situation.
My second artifact demonstrates a respect for the diversity within our building. For the past
two years our school has put on a Rider Pride Basketball Game, where we put on a game in
collaboration with our boys and girls basketball teams, a variety of student activities and
organizations, our schools Best Buddies program, and Ruby Van Meter School. The basketball
game is a demonstration of the accepting nature of our student body and their respect for
one another where students with special needs get to participate in a basketball game and be
part of something special. Attending the game the last two years is really an emotional
experience where you cant help but be proud of the school culture and the respect of our
student body in the way that they give back to the community. Another example of
respecting the diversity within our building our school puts on an annual PROUD assembly
where student organizations representing the different ethnic groups give presentations or
performances to educate the students about their culture. Some examples from this past

years assembly included poetry reading, choirs performing, and students performing dance
routines.
Being an administrator in a building as diverse as Roosevelt it is important to view our
diversity as an asset to our building and utilize it to teach our students about different
cultures and to respect the cultural diversity of our building.
