LIGHT AND SHADOWS

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Identify sources of light and describe the interaction of light with different
materials and infer the pathway of a light beam.
10. Recognize that light can be bent (refracted) and that such objects as aquaria,
prisms, and lenses can be used to show that light beams can be bent.
11. Recognize that light can be broken into colours and that different colours of
light can be combined to form a new colour.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

What do you want your students to learn?

Students will:
1. Identify the varying components of light (ROYGBIV) from white light.
2. Identify that light can be refracted through prisms and water.
3. Realize that light moves slower in water than air, determined through the pencil and arrow
experiments.

Body
Learning Activity

Assessment

Demonstration of how white light is composed of

seven different colours, how the primary colours mix
and all the colours of the rainbow emerge from
white light.
Move into prism experiment, hand out prisms and
flashlights, let students try on their own.
Move onto the arrow experiment, have students
complete worksheet.
Move forward and have students perform pencil
experiment, have them complete the worksheet.
Answer/ask questions, move into close.

Assessment of
Learning /
Next Class

Today we learned that light is made up of several

colours, not just white, and that light can actually be
bent through different mediums such as water and
prisms.
We learned that light moves slower in water than air,
and that is why the pencil looks bent and the arrow
changed direction.
Next class we will expand our knowledge of light and
utilize what we know to actually handling optic
devices and understanding how light works in a
microscope for example.
Hand out Skittles for students to taste the rainbow
