Change is such an imperative aspect within todays time. I certainly believe that
in order for students to grow within the educational curriculum that teachers are also
going to have to grow and build onto their professional development. In order for
teachers and professionals to manage with the concepts on the rise in professional
development, they must refine teaching methods, collaboration tactics, establish a vision,
and lastly, evaluate the data design throughout the entire process. So what exactly is
professional development? Professional development refers to the development of a
person in his or her professional role (Why Professional Development for Teachers is
Critical, 2012). Teachers need structure, training, practice and feedback on how to work
together in a mutually respectful manner for the good of all students. Education needs to
develop a collaboration ethic for all teachers as they are preparing for professional
development implementation.
Moving forward, within professional development, I would want to focus on these
three specific goals to help teachers succeed no matter what grade level they are
interacting with. The first is, Visionary Leadership because this sets the focus on taking
the responsibility for your classroom environment as well as role flexibility when it
comes to taking the lead within different areas that will help support student learning.
Secondly, Effective Direct Coaching due to the support that teachers need in developing
their own goals as well as coaching on an individual basis with administration that in turn
will support teachers in creating effective lesson curriculum. Lastly, Time Management
Techniques due to teachers wanting to know how to manage an array of aspects within
the classroom that will in turn benefit their learners. According to Top 12 Development
Goals for Leaders, time management is integral because teachers need to Get a handle

on where they are wasting time and shift the focus to more value-added activities.
Learning to prioritize is essential and this is a key factor within professional
development. Further, I believe that it is also essential to add on bi-weekly systematic
staff development meetings to ensure that special resources are used efficiently across
programs such as, instructional assistants, curriculum adaptation, integrated therapy
services, peer supports, technology, and assistive devices (Tomlinson, 2000).
Indeed, these aspects of professional development cannot occur overnight. I
believe that it is essential to set a timeline for either every other Saturday or create a mini
summer program that can tailor to these needs for teachers. I would implement a survey
to get input and suggestions and then move forward from there. Additionally, we can
also fundraise to create a summer program if necessary. In order to achieve these
desired goals of proper professional development for teachers, there also has to be a
geared action plan. Within this action plan, administrators must effectively work one-onone with teachers and reintegrate the schools visionary plan. Secondly, setting up weekly
meeting to discuss visionary leadership, effective coaching strategies, and time
management techniques. These required meetings could occur either weekly or biweekly in order for teacher performance to improve.
More importantly, is the measurement of achievement from teachers as this new
professional development plan is implemented. In order for proper measurement to
occur, administrators and professionals will have to observe teachers weekly and set up
one-on-one meetings at the end of the week to discuss progress and opportunities. These
specific one-on-one meetings can occur monthly or bi-monthly. With the implementation
of visionary leadership, effective one-on-one coaching, and time management techniques,
