1. Topic 6 Review Day

2. Lesson Essential Question(s):
How can drawing a picture help you solve problems and help you check if your answers make
sense?
How can you identify and complete doubles facts and near doubles facts?
How can a ten-frame help simplify addition?
3. Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.8 Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or
subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown
number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = _ - 3, 6 + 6 = _.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word
problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with
a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Learning Objectives

Assessments

Students will connect the visual image of a

ten frame to solve addition facts that have 5
as one addend or that have a sum of 10.

Teacher will assess student activity sheets

at the end of the lesson.

Students will identify and complete doubles

and near doubles facts.

Teacher will assess the sort pages on

doubles facts.

Materials:

Projector and Math Tools Program

Doubles and 10 fact activity sheets (differentiated)
Manipulatives
Ten Frames worksheet.

6.

Prior Knowledge:
Students have been exposed to all of the topics in the lesson previously. Students
should have knowledge of how to complete the different types of problems, though they may
need assistance from a teacher for problems with ten-frames.

7.

Lesson Beginning:
The teacher will begin the lesson by having students do stretches. The teacher will then
go over some of the strategies learned in Topic 6. She will remind students of the various
strategies such as adding on 0, 1 and 2, doubles and near doubles facts, ten frame tricks and
word problems.

8. Instructional Plan:
The teacher will then tell students that they will be reviewing many of these topics in the lesson.
She will start with word problems.
The teacher will pull up the math tools program on the projector. She will type a word problem
on the screen for students to see. Together they will figure out what picture to draw and what
number sentence they need to write that will match the picture and words.
After the whole class review of word problems, the teacher will explain the stations that the
students will be going to. First she will put the students into partners of similar ability level to
do doubles, near doubles and 10 facts. They will be able to play a sorting game and complete a
worksheet.
While the partners are on the rug, the teacher will pull the lower level students to the back table
to complete a worksheet about solving addition facts on a ten frame.
After a few minutes of working, she will have students switch activities. She will have the
lower level students complete doubles and near doubles facts using manipulatives. The teacher
will guide the rest of the class through the ten frames worksheet.
Closure.
o Differentiation:
The teacher will split the class into same ability pairs to complete the stations. Lower level
students will be called to the back table for extra assistance. They will also be given
manipulatives to help solve doubles and doubles plus one problems. Challenge questions will be
put onto the worksheets for students to try. The teacher will read the questions on the worksheet
aloud for students who have trouble. Students who need extra assistance are seated in the front
rows. The teacher will periodically check their progress during each part of the lesson.

o Questions:
What are some of the strategies weve been learning about?
What can we use to help us solve word problems?
Can we have a different amount of pictures than the numbers in the word problem?
Can you find them sum for this problem?
Can you say the number sentence?
How do we know that a fact is a doubles fact?
How can we find the answer to a near doubles fact?
How can we use ten frames to solve the problems?
o Classroom Management:
Miss Falconer will start a clap and voice signals to regain students attention during the lesson.
She will use the chime when it is time to switch activities Teams who are able to follow
directions will be awarded points. Individual students who work especially quietly during
activity sheet time will be awarded a Silly Sam award.
o Transitions:
Students will remain at their desks for the word problem activity. They will then come to the
rug to go over the activities they will be doing during the lesson. Some students will be called to
the back table, while others sit on the abc or zoo rugs. The teacher will sound a chime when it is
time to switch activities.
9. Closure: As students finish, they will be allowed to work on math learning center pages
related to the topics covered in class. The students will review the different strategies one at
time at the end of the lesson.
