Preparing for Lesson Development

1. What does your pre-assessment observation indicate about your
students needs and current performance and educational needs?
Upon pre-assessment I have learned that my students do not want to learn
about poetry because they think it will be boring. They have no knowledge of
what poetry can be and are having trouble paying attention to details in text.
2. How will you design the lesson to meet the needs of all learners in
your classroom? My lesson plan will engage all the students with their own
projects. I will be able to circulate among the students who are not able to
grasping the concepts and address their problems head on and appropriately.
They will be able share their own poetry version and share the picture.
Lesson Plan Development
Lesson Title: Poetry
Common Core and/or State Standard: Writing Standards
Production and Distribution of Writing
4. With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and
organization are
appropriate to task and purpose. (Grade specific expectations for writing types are defined
in standards 1-3 above.)
Text Types and Purposes
3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective
technique, descriptive details,
and clear event sequences.
a. Establish a situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event
sequence that unfolds
naturally.
b. Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences
and events or show the
response of characters to situations
Technology Content Standard 3
The student will apply digital tools and skills with creativity and innovation to express
his/herself, construct knowledge and develop products and processes.
Rationale
Digital tools can support creative and innovative expression, which is increasingly necessary
in our changing world. The use of these tools can also facilitate the realization and
fulfillment of one's talents and interests. The education community has the responsibility to
provide access to the new avenues for creation and require nuanced understandings of
digital citizenship and ownership.

3.3 use technology to recognize trends and possible outcomes

3.4 examine the relationship of copyright to ownership of digital media
3.5 use digital tools and skills to construct new personal understandings

Needs
Anticipatory Set1. I want the students to relate this to life by
having them know how that there's nothing wrong
with having an imagination.
They need to know that poetry will be a part of
their lives whether they like it or not and it can be
enjoyable.

Objective
2. I will read My Puppy Punched me in the Eye
By: Kenn Nesbitt

Poem sheet
attached

Have them sit

where they want
as long as they
are quiet and can
see.

My puppy punched me in the eye.

My rabbit whacked my ear.
My ferret gave a frightful cry
and roundhouse kicked my rear.
My lizard flipped me upside down.
My kitten kicked my head.
My hamster slammed me to the ground
and left me nearly dead.
So my advice? Avoid regrets;
no matter what you do,
don't ever let your family pets
take lessons in kung fu.
--Kenn Nesbitt
(5 minutes)

Stories aren't always real and can be fun too
Using your imagination is fine
Some people have pets so make this project your

Poetry doesnt have to be boring
Does poetry always have to rhyme?
What do you think about this poem?
(10 minutes)
Check for Understanding
4. Ask students to explain why we're doing a
lesson on this?
To pay attention to key details in a text
To understand poetry and how to write poetry
To construct pictures to go with key concepts (5
minutes)
Guided Practice
5.Have the student go over directions with you.(5
minutes)
Students need to write their favorite part of the
poem to the author
Then the students need to write their own poem
and put it on storybird. We will walk through
storybird and how to get a free account, then I will
show them how to navigate the site. I will do my
own little poem.
Then they need to illustrate their poem and we will
upload the pictures when they're done.
Independent Practice
Directions:
You can brainstorm at your pod but this is an
individual project.I am available to help you as
much as possible because this may be tricky for
some people.
When you get your poem and picture done on a
piece of paper, go get your computer and log in.
From there go to storybird and start making your
poem. I will upload pictures when you're complete.
Remember to draw your picture with lots of color.
Ask your students to repeat your directions
GIve them 30 minutes to complete their project
Give a 10 minute warning and a 5 minute warning
Have volunteers show their work and then call of
people to explain their poem or ending.

Evidence of Lesson Effectiveness/Student Learning: The student will have

leaned by the completion of their poem and drawing.

Reflection and Recommendations for Next Time: Possibly to easy for some and
hard for others so have extra activity for those who need it. May need additional help on the
computers.
