Answers :
1) a) Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to how far you have traveled, regardless of
direction while Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to how far out of place an
object is; it is the object's overall change in position.
b) Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to how fast you can go while Velocity is a vector
quantity that refers to how fast and which way; the rate at which position changes.
2) a) Velocity
b) Acceleration
c) Displacement
3) a) The graph shows that v = 2.5 m/s at first 2s, v = 0 m/s at next 3s and v = -5 m/s at last
1s. The negative value of velocity due to the object is moving backward with constant
velocity.
b) i) From 3m, we get distance of 2m for 1s, 0m distance for next 3s and 5m distance for
last 1 s. Therefore, the total distance travelled = 2m + 0m + 5m = 7m
ii) Since displacement is a vector quantity; total displacement is 0 m/s
d) v = 2.5 m/s at first 2s, v = 0 m/s at next 3s and v = -5 m/s at last 1s. The negative value
of velocity due to the object is moving backward with constant velocity.
e) Average velocity = 1 m/s
4) No. This is because if we do not change the time, the displacement also would not
change.
5) The object moving backward make it deceleration.

6)

7) Initial velocity, u = 108km/h = 30 m/s

Final velocity, v = 0 km/h = 0 m/s
Acceleration, a = gravitational acceleration = -9.81 m/s2
Distance, d = ?
v2 = u2 + 2 ad
d = v2 u2 / 2a
d = 02 302 / 2 (- 9.81)

d = 45.87 m
8) According to the equation v = u + at, when a stone is thrown down at a speed u, the
acceleration and final velocity will be constant at 9.81 m/s2 and 0m/s respectively and
only time (t) will be unknown. So, when the stone u is double to 2u, the only the time will
be changed. By that the impact of speed will not double and the answer is no.
