Grade level: 9 grade Biology I
1) TEKS
112.34. Biology
(c) Knowledge and skills
(5) Science concepts. The student knows how an organism grows and the
importance of cell differentiation. The student is expected to:
(A) describe the stages of the cell cycle, including deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
replication and mitosis, and the importance of the cell cycle to the growth of
organisms
Objective: The students will make a graphic organizer that includes the stages of the
cell cycle: Mitosis, Gap1, Synthesis, Gap2; so that they can better understand the
information.

2) Big Understanding
The cell cycle is the complex sequence of events by which
cells grow and divide. In eukaryotic cells, the cell cycle
includes four phases: Mitosis (M), Gap1 phase (G1),
Synthesis phase (S), and Gap2 phase (G2).
The cell cycle is necessary for all cells on the planet to
reproduce, without it reproduction will cease to exist.

3) Assessment Evidence
Students know that cells are the basic structures of all living things with specialized parts that perform specific functions. We have been learning
about how organisms grow and the importance of cell differentiation. We will be making models that will show what happens in each stage that a
cell goes through in order to reproduce; including mitosis, Gap1, Synthesis, and Gap2. Students will then use those models to play a review activity
before a quiz.
4) Opening Hook
Do you like to watch videos, make models, and play a game? Well today we are going to do all these activities while learning at the same time!

5) Instructional Strategies/Activities
Teacher will use a YouTube video to briefly open the lesson, followed by a short lecture that will further describe the video. Students will then
create a model about the cell cycle based on the video, lecture, and book information. Students will then get to use their models to play a review
game on Kahoots. By using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic aids students will be able to use the method most effective for them to grasp the
concept of the cell cycle. Students can work in pairs or small groups to help each other while making their models as the teacher walks around
offering help and support. The Kahoots game will let all students participate in expressing their knowledge of the subject, as well as checking for
student understanding of the cell cycle.

6)

Materials/Resources
a. Short YouTube video about cell cycle diagram- shows all the cycles
b. Sample of cell cycle model for the students to replicate (tangible)
c. Kahoot online game to allow students to use their model while reviewing information they learned in class

7) Grouping Patterns
Work in small cooperative groups to assemble models
Whole class will participate in discussion and game at end of class
8) Ending Summary/ Reflection
Students will use their model as an aid to answer questions in the review game to prepare them for the upcoming quiz. What are the stages in the
cell cycle? What happens in each cycle?

9) Technology
I will compose a review unit game on the online game/app Kahoot so students can participate in a fun activity and also review information that
they learned in class.
