Song

Song title
Kathleen

Artist
Catfish and the Bottlemen

Genre
Indie Rock

What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?

Many indie rock bands or rock bands in general are more focused on performing the music
and less of the money and success as it has always been about doing what they love and
making the music. They show the band or artist performing and often have close ups of them
with their instruments. They dont always have a narrative because they want their video to
be focused on the music and them performing. Some videos, however, include narrative so
the lyrics to the song can be interpreted and also easily portrayed. Mise-en-scene is also
another key convention as make-up, costume and props help to shape the genre and assist
the artist to establish themselves within that genre.

How are you going to meet these conventions in your video?

Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative; narrative;
impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)

My video will feature a performance of one of the artists who will be singing and playing the
guitar. I will aim to meet the conventions of this genre of music by having the artist in the
video and having him feature in the majority of the video. This will show how passionate he is
towards the song and creating music. It will also have a scene of a couple arguing in the
background as their story helps to portray the intended message of the lyrics. Other generic
conventions that are typically used such as props and enhanced lighting will also be used in
my music video. As the main prop in my video, a guitar will be added a more rock feel and
will also help to show off the artists talents. I will use a variety of lighting effects in order to
enhance and set the mood of my video. Due to the lyrics of the song being about
relationships and how tough they can be, the lights will be used to create a dim and
depressed mood to reflect the song. I will also use the green screen and add

Costume

The main actor in my video will wear clothes that will represent the band and also genre. For
example, he will wear dark skinny jeans, a dark top and a leather jacket

The lighting created in my music video will

Research
What music videos have you watched to research your genre?
Whilst researching my genre, I watched the music videos that Catfish and the
Bottlemen have created for a few of their songs. This helped as they are the band of
the song I have chosen to do.

How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key
influences

Their video for Kathleen influence the lighting that I

have used. They use an eerie, dark red which sets the
mood, therefore I decided to use similar colours but
also use blue lighting for the slower emotional parts of
the song.

Lyrics
I win, you lose
It's only for us two
I win, you lose
I remember days when we were all alone
If you would ever leave me
I would call your phone
We would talk for days
And never leave my home
I think about it
Always found a reason to be strong apart
Always wondered if and when you'd break my heart
You would try and argue with me from the start
I can live without it
Come on and baby take my hand now
Remember when we used to say now
It's where it all began
It's where we always hide it
You're tired of being disregarded
You wonder why you're broken hearted
We've been here times before
We've been here since it started
Yeah
I win, you lose
It's only for us two
I win, you lose
Funny how we can leave things just the way they are
Having fun with you wasn't so bizarre
But we can never be more than an open scar
I think about it
Never took the time to ever wonder why
Could have been if we were caught that we'd be laughing or crying
But we would never learn because we both denied it
I can live without it

Come on and baby take my hand now

Remember when we used to say now
It's where it all began
It's where we always hide it
You're tired of being disregarded
You wonder why you're broken hearted
We've been here times before
We've been here since it started
Yeah
I win, you lose
It's only for us two
I win, you lose
It's only for us two
I win, you lose
It's only for us two
I win, you lose
It's only for us two
I win
I win
I win
I win
I win
I win
I win

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?
The meaning of the song is that when you are in love with someone, and that although they
burn your clothes and are completely crazy, you just keep going back to them when
youre drunk.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)

The visuals used in my song will help to illustrate the mood set by the song. The dark red
and blue coincide with the mood set in certain parts of the song. As it is an emotional song,
my actor, whilst miming the lyrics to the song, will be showing emotion and how the
arguments in the song upset and anger him.
