Field Trip Essay 10

Reflection Essay IDU
Visiting the NGOs and the content learned has increased my understanding and awareness
of the complex issues that are about human rights, fairness and development. Visiting them makes
me go deeper into the issues that the NGOs face and make connections to the human rights issues
that I learned in school. From the field trip I have learned about the issues that happened in Sukunan
village, Interfidei, Pusat Rehabilitasi Yakkum, and Rumah Sakit Bethesda.
In Sukunan village I learned a lot about waste management. The village that we visited has a
very complex understanding about waste management and creating a better environment. An
example is they have a filter machine that filters water from houses to be used again as irrigation.
This waste management program relates to the development, because waste management is a way
of managing waste and developing the environment to make a better, cleaner village.
In Interfidei we talked a lot about how churches and some Islamic beliefs are being
pressured and discriminated by the society in Jogjakarta. Many Christian and Catholic churches are
being banned from having services because of condition reasons. The local government basically
did nothing to stop the society from banning and even destroying the churches and some Islamic
beliefs that they consider different than them. This relates to human rights violation which is the
right to religion, and no discrimination. From this place we heard live cases from the people that
experienced the human right violations and heard their thoughts about the discrimination. The cases
can also relate to fairness. They also have been treated with unfairness with no good reason behind
it.
In Pusat Rehabilitasi Yakkum we learned about the place and even got a chance to meet the
children that were studying in the place. We learned about how the rehabilitation center work on

kids and adults with disabilities, physically and mentally. They created crutches and other
supporting tools for patients with physical disability. We also got a chance to spend time with kids
that are suffering from cerebral palsy, and even sing with them together. We were touched by the
conditions that they have and grateful of being who we are with our healthy body and mind. We
also learned that we have to support people with disabilities such as your friends or family. From
this place we can connect to the human rights that everyone is equal, no matter if they have
disabilities or not. No discrimination, and everyone have the right to education, because sometimes
the disabled didn't go to school because of being ashamed of their condition. This can be seen from
the video they show about a boy who lived with disability, and they support this boy so that now he
can go to university. This can also relate to development. This rehab center is developing disabled
people to carry on with their lives and live a good life regardless their disability. Public places also
should have things that can support disabled when going through stairs such as lift and more. It
relates to when Jesus said to love each other as yourself. In this NGO we shared love to each other
by visiting them and spending time with them.
In Rumah Sakit Bethesda we learned and got a chance to meet with people with HIV/AIDS.
We learned a lot about the virus, how it can contract others, how to avoid, and how to treat people
with HIV/AIDS. We learned that people with HIV/AIDS shouldnt be treated differently or
discriminated. We also meet a person who is HIV positive. He shared his experience getting the
disease, his reaction which is joining the NGO to prevent others from getting the same disease, and
giving advices to us regarding avoiding the disease. We can connect this to human rights which as
the right to life, no discrimination, and the right to privacy. We also learned from the NGO that they
are making a development of the society to get to know better about HIV/AIDS and how to treat
people living with the disease.
From visiting the NGOs I gained a deeper understanding about the issues that they face that
relates to human rights, fairness and development. I also learned a lot about HIV/AIDS, disable
people, and religion issues in Jogjakarta. I also get to know and apply what Jesus commands which

is to love God and love each other as yourself. Overall, this field trip is an amazing and fun
experience especially with friends, but also raises awareness to the complex issues about human
rights, fairness and development.
