Center for Life Skills

Fall 2014
Therapists Leading the Session: Dana F. & Rachel S.
Program Plan for Friday, October 31, 2014 from 9-10 a.m.
Title of Program: Identifying Strengths and Self-reflection
Alternate Program: Strengthening Intentions and Attention
Purpose of Program:
To introduce and experience the concept of noticing and appreciating our ordinary, everyday
strengths. Participants will become aware of and identify their own unique set of personal
strengths that help them accomplish everyday feats, as well as recognize those strengths shared
by the group as a whole. Participants will reflect on past experiences and determine how these
experiences have positively influenced their lives.
Alternate Program:
Client Characteristics:
Participants should be able to comprehend and execute the verbal and/or written directions
required to complete the Identifying Strengths and Self-reflection handout. Participants should be
able to identify at least three personal strengths and one group strength, as well as engage in
appropriate social interactions in both large and small group activities. Participants will be
encouraged to reflect on the people and experiences in their lives, as well as identify how they
may have influenced and shaped them into the person they are today.
Clients to be involved in the program:
All participants are expected to participate. Participants should include: Andrea, Helene, Jennifer,
Meredyth, Norman, Sophia, and Stacey.
Program goals and measurable objectives:
1. Participants will utilize the following communication skills:
a. Participants will comprehend and execute verbal and/or written directions.
b. Participants will express their thoughts, opinions, and feelings through verbal and
nonverbal modalities.
c. Participants will share a personal story of how they got to a recent appointment,
including relevant personal history and stressors that impacted their ability to attend the
appointment.
d. Participants will adhere to social conventions (e.g., turn-taking, maintaining topics,
repairing breakdowns, etc.) when interacting in both large and small groups.
2. Participants will utilize the following cognitive abilities:
a. Participants will become aware of and identify the strengths (given a list of key words,
e.g., flexible, patient, open) they possessed in order to complete their appointment.
b. Participants will use their judgment and reasoning to identify different people and
events in their lives and show how these people and events have had an influence on who
they are today.
c. Participants will use their short-term and long-term memory to think back and reflect
on their past.

Program Description:
1. All participants will face towards the facilitators in a large U-shape around several tables.
2. Dana and Rachel will welcome participants and provide the following information:
a) Dana and Rachel will introduce the concept of being in the present and the importance of
looking at ourselves and each other through a strengths-based lens. The BREATH pathway will
be reviewed.
2-5 minutes
b) Participants will be arranged in pairs at each table. Dana and Rachel will distribute the
Identifying Strengths handout and provide verbal directions and examples on how to complete
each part.
10-15 minutes
c) Dana and Rachel will provide slips of colored paper and markers to each table. Participants
will be instructed to think of strengths that characterize the group and write them down on the
colored paper. The participants will share these strengths and fill-in the "WE" diagram on the
easel.
5-10 minutes
d) Dana and Rachel will provide instructions on the second activity. Worksheets will be provided
and participants will be asked to fill in the tree diagram by answering the corresponding
questions. Participants may discuss their responses with therapists and participants if they
choose.
15-20 minutes
e) Dana and Rachel will debrief the participants and relate the activities back to the BREATH
pathway.
