StudentsinsecondgradeinLouisianamustbeabletoComparethelifecyclesofselected
organisms(e.g.,mealworm,caterpillar,tadpole)(LouisianaStateStandardsfor2ndgrade,
LifeScience,LSEB3).Inordertobeabletocomparevariouslifecycles,studentsmustfirst
haveanunderstandingofwhatalifecycleis,andknowthedetails(ageappropriate)ofeach
ofthelifecyclestheymustcompare.Thisstandalonemultimediaelearningwillbean
effectivewaytogetthestudentsfamiliarwithonesuchlifecycle,thelifecycleofthe
caterpillar.Studentswillbeabletomoveattheirownpace,andinteractwitheachstagein
thelifecycletofullyunderstandeachoftheelementsinpreparationforcomparingittoother
lifecyclesinthefuture.

TargetAudience:
ThetargetaudienceforthiseLearningissecondgradestudents,around78yearsold.
Manystudentsatthisagedonothaveadvancedtypingskillsbut(almost)allhavebasic
mouseskillsand/orarefamiliarwithhowtouseatouchscreentablet.

Studentswillhavesomepriorknowledgeofanimalsandtheiroffspring(firstgrade)tohelp
themunderstandthedifferencesinsomeofthestagesofthelifecycle,aswellasprior
knowledgeofthelifecyclesofsomemammals,suchashumansanddogs(kindergarten).

3. identifythestagesofthelifecycleofacaterpillar
4. matcheachstageofthelifecycleofthecaterpillartothecorrespondingimage
5. arrangegivenimagesofeachstageofthecaterpillarlifecycleinthecorrectorder.

AssessmentInstruments:
Thislessonisdesignedforstudentsaround78yearsold.Withthatinmind,the
assessmentswillbedraganddropinteractionsormultiplechoicequestionswithillustrations
toensurethelearnercandemonstratemasteryoftheobjectiveswithoutbeingchallengedby
othertypesofassessments(suchastypingshortanswersorreadinglongmultiplechoice
questionswithtext).Eachlearningobjectivewillbeassessedwithaseparateassessment
slide.Feedbackwillbeprovidedinthreevariations:(a)correct,(b)tryagain(allowingone

moreattemptwith2attemptstotal),and(c)incorrect.Attheendoftheassessment,learners
willbeabletoseetheiroverallresultsfortheentireassessmentandwillbepromptedto
reviewanyofthematerialtheystruggledwithduringtheassessment.

InstructionalStrategies:
Theinstructionwillbesegmentedintosmallparts,accordingtothelearningobjectivethatpart
isaddressingtokeepthelearnerfocusedononeobjectiveatatime.Thelearningobjectives
willbestatedatthebeginningofthelessontoensurethelearnerisawareoftheendgoalof
thelesson.Informationwillbekeptsimple,asappropriatefortheageofthelearners.

Graphicsandsimpleanimationwillbeusedalongwithaudionarrationtopresentthe
informationinawaythatwillnotoverloadthelearnerscognitiveability.Aninteractive
diagramofthecaterpillarlifecyclewillallowthelearnertovieweachpartattheirownpaceas
wellasoffertheabilitytoreviewanypartsagainforclarification.

Onscreentextthroughoutthelessonwillbelimitedtothenamesofeachpartofthelifecycle
(i.e.egg,caterpillar,chrysalis,adult)tofamiliarizethelearnerwiththekeyterms.

Anonscreenagentwillprovidetheinstructionandwillbepresentontheassessment
feedbackslidestogivethelearnerstheperceptionofinteractionwiththeinstructorand
providesomepersonalization.

InstructionalMaterials:
Audiowillbeusedfornarrationoftheinstruction.Audiomayalsobeusedasahover
interactiononthekeytermspresentedasonscreentextintheassessmentstoensure
learnersarenotbeingtestedontheirreadingability,butrathertheirmasteryofthelearning
objectives.

Imagesandanimationswillbeusedtodemonstratethepartsofthecaterpillarlifecycle.The
sameimagesusedintheinstructionwillbeusedintheassessment.

Onscreentextwillbeusedtohighlightthekeyterms.

Videosmaybeusedtoenhancethelearning,forexampletoshowthebutterflyemergingfrom
thechrysalis.
