Year 3 Term 3

Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing break

and are ready for the final term. We have a busy
few weeks coming up, with the camping trip, our end
of year fayre and many interesting units of work
within our new topic Comics & Cartoons.

Dear Parents,
The children will continue to collect marbles this term as part of an ongoing
reward scheme where children are awarded marbles for good behaviour and
helpfulness. They will, once again, choose class rewards for each hundred
marbles they earn.
Last term, the pupils collected an amazing number of house points to celebrate
their excellent work. The children work towards gaining a Bronze, Silver and
Gold Certificate for 25, 50 and 100 House Points, and a Platinum certificate for
those children who reach 200 House Points. Each child belongs to a particular
House (Vikings, Romans, Normans and Saxons) and any House Points gained are
also added together to get a weekly total for each House throughout the school.
We do encourage you to support your child with homework and to give help
where necessary but also to encourage independent skills. Nightly reading with
your child is encouraged and appreciated.
It is very good to see so many children continuing to look very smart for school
and wearing their correct uniforms. Thank you for your continued support with
this.

Literacy
Year 3 will begin the term by learning about the features and importance of persuasive writing. They
will learn about the language features and structure of persuasive text and how to put together a
balanced argument. To apply their learning, towards the end of the unit they will create a persuasive
TV advertisement for an action figure and will have to write a persuasive letter to a villain.
Next they will compare and analyse a range of myths, identifying the common text structure and
language used. They will identify how settings impact on events in a quest myth then they will create
an interactive story map to support planning their own quest ideas. Children will then be ready to
write their own quest myths, incorporating challenging settings and interesting characters, which will
be presented as comic book style stories.
The children will then move on to learn the forms of Haiku, Tanka and Kenning poems. The children
will learn the features of each genre of poem looking at the number of words, syllables and lines.
They will practise their use of figurative language to include similes, metaphors and personification
in their poems.

Numeracy

The children will continue to build on their understanding of numbers and number facts. They will be
reinforcing the four operations of numeracy in different contexts with investigations and problemsolving. They will study topics in shape, space and measures. The children will also learn various
strategies for developing and improving their mental maths.

Topic (Geography, History, Science, Art & Design, ICT)

Within our Comics and Cartoons topic, the children will be learning about forces and magnets. This
will include testing materials to see if they magnetic and the strength of different magnets to
create the most effective superhero. The children will then go on to investigate friction and how
different materials can affect the force needed to move an object.
The children will be learning all about the history of cartoons. This will include methods of creation,
and also the demand for new types of entertainment during different periods of time. The children
will also be learning about the origins of comics, as well as understanding their context and
differences around the world.
This will link into Art & Design as the children will be creating their very own animations using a
range of techniques, used in the history of comics and cartoons.
The children will also be designing and making pneumatic superheroes linked to our topic. They will
have the opportunity to explore different ways you can create pneumatic movements as well as
create some amazing and realistic action, using a range of materials and techniques. The pneumatic
movements will be designed by the children and will bring the superhero to life.
Children will be using ICT as a tool throughout the curriculum. Specific skills focused on this term
will be, understanding and applying coding, creating their own coded cartoon. The children will also
be using Aardman technology to create stop motion animation, as well as designing their own comic
using technology to support their understanding of layout and organisation.

SPECIALIST LESSONS
Portuguese
During term three, Year 3 children will explore five different topics within Portuguese
lessons: Healthy lifestyle; fantastic stories; circus; Brazilian celebrations; Brazilian culture
(personalities). For PFL (Portuguese as a Foreign Language) children, we will be focusing on basic
vocabulary and language skills to enhance communication in Portuguese. For Brazilian children and
foreigners who speak Portuguese, they will cover objectives taken from the Brazilian National
Curriculum (MEC) which includes exploring more sophisticated vocabulary and encouraged children to
participate in discussion which will involve expressing ideas and opinions related to the topic. More

Physical Education

Games - (Striking and Fielding) - In Striking and Fielding games the children will practice striking
the ball into spaces with increasing accuracy. When fielding, they will be encouraged to work
together to keep the batters' scores down. In all games activities, children have to think about how
they use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition.
Dance - In this unit children perform dances, focusing on creating, adapting and linking a range of
dance actions. In dance as a whole, children think about how to use movement to explore and
communicate ideas and issues, and their own feelings and thoughts. As they work they develop an
awareness of the historical and cultural origins of different dances.

Music

The children will be exploring sounds and colours and how they relate to each other. They will learn
how to combine instruments with different emotions as well. They will also be learning about singing
games and how they contribute to a childs learning process. They will also be creating their own
singing game.

Art

Comics & Cartoons - Year 3 will be learning about the American artist, Keith Haring and his
colourful, energetic figures. After finding out about the artist and viewing his artwork, the children
will create their own Haring style figures using a variety of drawing techniques. They will then study
Harings morphing animations and create their own moving sequences as flipbooks, linking their
artwork to their new class topic of Comics & Cartoons.
Textiles The children will look at examples of thread and textiles used to create pictures, objects
or patterns. They will learn to recognise and sort these materials and group them by colour, texture
and properties. The children will design their own superhero logos then produce these using a range
of textile-based techniques. After completion they will be attached to a stunning superhero cape!
