1. Whathappenedduringtheobservation?Whatdidthestudentsdo?WhatdidIdo?
Ipulledthestudentsaroundmysmartboardandwedecidedwhatweshoulddowhenwewaitinthe
hallway,entertheroom,andexittheroom.Wedecidedwecouldthinkofthethreemostimportant
things.Ihadthethreethingsinmind,butIwantedthestudentstobetheonetothinkofthem.I
guidedthemtowhatIwanted.Wedrewpicturesalongwithwrotewhatwedeemedimportantfor
eachpart.Thestudentstheymadetheirownpaperwiththerulesandputitintheirbinder.Ithen
hadmygiantpostitandputalltherules(wordsandpictures)onit.Iplaceditonmydoor,sothe
studentswillseeitwhentheyenterandwhentheyexit.
2. Whatpleasedme?
Ilovedthatthestudentsreallytookownershipofthis.Theywereproudtheythoughtofthem
themselves.AlsoIreallylikedhowwellitseemedtowork.Thestudentswereawareoftheir
ownbehaviorandheldeachotheraccountable.
3. Whatdisappointedme?
Iwashopingtheywouldreallytaketheirownpaperoftherulesandownthat.Theydidit,but
IfeellikemaybeIrusheditordidntputenoughmeritbehinditbecausetheydidntputforthas
muchasIhadhopedonthatproject.
4. TowhatdegreedidIaccomplishmygoal?
IbelieveIdidaccomplishmygoal.Thestudentstookownershipofwhatrulestheyshould
followinmyroom.Ihavestudentstalkingtomeaboutwhattheyhavetodowhentheyenteror
exitmyroom.Thattellsmethattheyarethinkingofhowtheyshouldbehavewheninmyroom.
Thatiswhatmygoalwas,tocreategoodsmoothtransitions.
5. WhatmightIdodifferentlyinthefuture?
Nextyear,Iwilldothisintheverybeginningoftheyear.Iseesuchgreatthingsandwouldlike
tohavethatallyearlong.Iwouldalsoputmoremeritbehinddoingtheirownrulestoputin
theirbinder.Iwantthemtoreallytakeprideinit.
