Informal Assessment for Idiom Lesson

Informal Assessment: Observation/Participation

Objective: Students will participate in identifying examples of
idioms in writing and completing the examples I the teacher
provides with 100% participation.
Students will be able to identify the literal and figurative
meaning of the idioms as a group 8/10 times.
Directions: The students will be read a story Amelia Bedelia
the first 2 chapters (12 pages). They must identify examples
of idioms they find in the story. They will not be required to
find them all as we will go over them after, however, I would
walk around afterwards as another student writes the
examples we find on the board to make sure all the students
have something written down. We will then go over the idioms
and their meanings. I will then provide the students more
examples to practice and use for their idiom books (summative
assessment). We will go over the figurative and literal
meanings of the idioms. I will observe to make sure all
students are participating by either answering questions or
writing the idioms and definitions down.
Materials needed: a list of idioms, Amelia Bedelia book, a
student helper, chalk, chalkboard, paper, and pencils.

Differentiated Assessment: For a student I notice has a tough

time with the concepts I will make them write the definitions
and the examples we go over on the board. This way the
student will be integrated into the material by writing,
hearing, and they will read the phrases and definitions back to
the class in order to reinforce the concepts.
For ELLs: I will use phrases that are native to my students
different languages in order to use something familiar to them
and teach the native English speakers new phrases from
different cultures.
