Autism Speaks is a national organization that advocates for persons on the spectrum of autism disorders that affect 1 in 88 children. Autism Speaks funds research into treatment, prevention, and a possible cure. Recently the organization, through its philanthropic venture affiliate, sponsored a competition among app developers at Google's office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Winners received prize money to develop their ideas. First place of $25,000 went to PuzzlePiece, which presented customizable stories that helped parents teach living skills. Second place ($15,000) was given for the Naturalistic Observation Diagnostic Assessment, an app that helped screen for behaviors that could indicate autism. The third place winner,
chosen by the audience, consisted of $10,000 for InfiniTeach,
which helped parents and teachers tailor learning experiences for children with developmental disabilities.
