Tony Milani
Subnetting Lab
I set up a subnetted network using three switches connected by serial cables and determined IP address ranges for each
subnet using VLSM. I had to set up each switch with encrypted passwords for certain levels, create a banner to signal an authorized
section of the network, set IP addresses to certain interfaces, and set a clock rate on DCE serial interfaces. To set the passwords, I had
to enter global configuration mode and use the enable password command to set a password for privileged EXEC mode. For the
console and VTY passwords, I entered into their respective interface modes, con 0 for console and vty 0 4 for Telnet connection.
Then, I returned to global configuration mode and encrypted all the passwords. Following this, I created a banner to signal that the
router should only be accessed by authorized users. I then determined the IP address ranges for each portion of the network, going
from largest to smallest using the base network address of 172.16.128.0/17. Using the equation 2n-2, I found how many host addresses
were available for each subnet address. After finding the IP address range for each subnet, I set up each port on the three routers to
accommodate for the required subnet, as shown by the diagram below. Once all the IP addresses were set, I gave each a description
detailing what they are connected to. I also set a clocking rate to all the DCE serial interfaces. Finally, to confirm all the routers were set
up correctly, I pinged each router through the serial cable they were connected by.
I only had one problem when completing this lab. I hadnt correctly connected the serial cables to the right ports as shown by
the diagram below. I had connected them in a different way before I began the lab and realized after the pings didnt work that I hadnt
looked at the diagram to see if I had connected the cables in the correct ports. After fixing this mistake, I was able to successfully ping
from each router.
