Student Orientated Instruction

1. Students, as a class, record what they learnt in the previous lesson and in particular the
Indigenous connections. Link discussion to 'Kinship', By probing discussion to start
identifying & recognizing that the culture is different, ie; Is their value of the land different?
What else may be different? Perhaps they might see different family members differently?
2. Identify and explain the word 'Kinship'. Use a concept map, Use the word wall to construct
what makes up a family/Kinship, "Ask who is in your family, do you consider your aunt's
uncles to be family? What about close friends of your parents?"

3. Then relate to introduce indigenous side; People within the community and wider family are
often given a name. For example your uncle can also be called 'father' or your cousin can
be referred to as 'sister/brother'. It creates connectedness within the family. Ask students if
any of them have a form kinship within their family. Gauge comprehension by Asking
students 'What they think of kinship, does it sound odd or different? if so how?.
4. Introduced to students that there will be a guest speaker to talk about the importance of
Land, sea & animals to Indigenous peoples and provide a more in-depth understanding of
kinship and what it means to them. During this session promote student questioning, and
group discussion about the new information given to them.
5. Students: are to then write sentence about something they have found out within the lesson
and share it with the class. Have some students to post there sentence on the class
website.
