Elementary School Grade: 3rd grade Subject: Math Unit Plan Title: Geometry
Date: 1/27/14 Time Allotted: 1 hour
Lesson Title: Polyhedrons P.1 Lesson #: 6.11
STANDARDS: 3.G.1
STUDENTS LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES:
TLW identify parallel faces on prisms. TLW Distinguish between 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. TLW identify the faces of polyhedrons. TLW identify, compare, and contrast the characteristics of 3dimensional shapes. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES: TIM E:
and take a grade from the page as well. The Home Link paper should have been turned into the tray already. Anticipatory Set: Have students identify/name solid shapes using model shapes. What is the difference between plane shapes and solid shapes? (2D and 3D)Use reference book page 112 for definitions. Ask students discussion questions about solid shapes: 1) Which shapes can roll?, 2) Which shapes have a point, or apex?, 3) Which shape has no flat faces?, 4) Which shapes have all flat faces?, 5) Which shapes have both curved and flat faces? Make Connections: Hold up each model shape after they have been named and have the students name everyday items they see that are these shapes. Partner Practice: Pair students with their seat partner. Give each set of partners one of each solid net and one glue stick. (one page 194 and one page 195). Have the students construct their net into a 3D shape and secure with a glue stick. Each partner should be able to construct one of the shapes. Define polyhedron using page 115 in the student reference book. Use the 3D figures that the groups have constructed to define vocab terms (face, edge, vertices, base) and to discuss parallel sides in 3D objects. Guided Practice: Do page 151 in student math journals together to

refresh use of symmetry with plane shapes.
Independent Practice: Assign journal page 152 which will be graded and recorded. Also, assign Home Link page 196 to students to return tomorrow with parent signature. Extension: In the afternoon, take students to open lab to play a review game of the geometric solids on bbc.co and to take a look at the information that is on the mathisfun.com link.
ACCOMODATIONS FOR EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS:
GIFTED: These students could create a solid shape museum with everyday objects and present to kindergarteners and/or 1st graders as a museum if applicable. RESOURCE: These students can create Venn Diagrams of similarities and differences between geometric shapes.
LIST OF NECESSARY MATERIALS:
Student journal, student reference book, geometric shapes, Masters copies of 194-5 for each group, HL pg. 196, open lab
SAFETY: Internet safety and group cooperation
