Topic/Title: Dinosaurs
Target Age Group: 4 to 5 years old

Standards-Based Lesson Plan

Purpose/Objective/Outcomes:
The topic is on Dinosaurs. I chose this topic, because the child I observed had an interest in them. The
child mentioned going to a museum and how she saw dinosaurs there. The child would play with a
pretend dinosaur during outside play time and would talk to the pretend dinosaur. The children will
identify and learn about the many types of dinosaurs and there life cycles. The child will engage in
asking questions and answering questions through the process of learning and discussing dinosaurs.
Questions for the child include: What did they look like? What did they eat? How did they become
extinct? The child will also engage in reading books, learning activities, art, learning songs, etc. This
activity will focus on dinosaurs. This will help build their knowledge and understanding. The activity
that I am focusing on is having the child create dinosaurs and eggs out of the materials that I will
provide for her. I will build off of the childs already known knowledge about dinosaurs through this
learning activity.
The students will be able to:
The child will be able to adjust to new situations. The child will recognize and express their
feelings, reflect thoughts through their work, experiences, use of their fine motor skills when using

scissors, glue and other materials. They will demonstrate independence, engage in pretend play and
role play. Observe objects and materials set up with curiosity. Problem solve, explore the cause and
effect, ask and answer questions and participate in conversations and be able to express themselves.
Assessment of student outcomes:
I will track the childs progress through observation. I will use the childs work as a part of my
documentation. If I were in a classroom, I would use a portfolio for each child, once they have
completed work or activities I will put those into their own portfolio for them to keep. The child and
their parents can look at all the work the child did together. I will take photographs of the childs work
to keep as progress of that child, I will make sure to with the picture have note cards of what went on
in that particular picture to help me remember.

Instructional Strategies, Accommodations, and Student activities:

Instructional strategies-

I will set up the activities materials at a table. I will invite the child over to help me with the
activity. I will talk to them about what it is that they will be doing with me. I will start by having the
child choose the color of play dough that they would like, then have them take one dinosaur cookie
cutter and one egg shaped cookie cutter and set them aside. I will have the child use a rolling pin to
spread the play dough, until it is flat. Then have the child use their cookie cutters and make the shapes
a couple times. Then the child can decorate their dinosaur and egg with glitter and beads. As I am
doing the activity, I will talk to the child about dinosaurs and check for understanding.

Accommodations

Larger images of dinosaurs.

Speak in Spanish and English with the child.

Self-Evaluation/Assessment:
I hope my evaluation would be that I was successful in completing the activity with the child. I would
hope that the child learned and understood this activity, through using there fine motor skills,
communication skills and recognition of dinosaurs. I believe that with clear instruction of the activity
will help the child to comprehend what it is they are doing for the activity.

Skills and student behaviors to be worked on next time:

Student behaviors-

Have child sit next to a certain child.

Have child sit next to teacher for better understanding.

Have child work on their fine motor skills using the play dough, using a rolling pin, tools.
