Coursework for Pumps - Academic Year 2005/2006
Please attempt the following two questions and hand them in to the print room on or
before Wednesday, 26th April, 2006 at 4:00pm. This coursework will count 5% of the

The pump is connected to a pumping main which is 250 mm in diameter, 120 m long
and has a Darcy f of 0.004. The pipeline discharges to atmosphere and the static lift is
12.4 m. Assume that the minor losses amount to 0.0028Q2 m of head (Q in m3/min)
and that pipe friction in the suction pipe can be ignored. Determine the flow in the
pipeline in m3/min.

2.
A centrifugal pump is has an impeller which is 350 mm in diameter with
backward facing blades. The diameter of the impeller at inlet is 90 mm and the width
of the impeller at this diameter is 25 mm. The blade angle at inlet is 250 and at exit is
100, both measured relative to a backward facing tangent. The water enters the
impeller with no velocity of whirl and the velocity of flow through the machine is
constant. The hydraulic and overall efficiencies of the pump are 75% and 60%
respectively. If the speed of rotation is 1450 RPM then determine the following:(i)

the flow in the pump

(ii)

the width of the impeller at outlet

(iii) the output head

(iv) the input power required to drive the pump
(v)

the pressure rise across the impeller

(vi) the head loss in the volute

Assume that the drive shaft is vertical and that head loss in the impeller can be
ignored
