Bachelard, Gaston, M. Jolas, and John R. Stilgoe. The Poetics of Space. Boston: Beacon,
1994. Print.
This book is a reference in Tuan's work cited. In two chapters, the author talks
about the nature of animals' sentimental feelings toward nests and people's nature
toward home. I chose this source because I want to compare this author's view
with Tuan's point, drawing a conclusion that people commonly think that home is
just a shelter rather than a spiritual ballast. I will object their point that humans
sentimental attachment toward home is just an animal instinct to seek shelter.
Lahiri, Jhumpa. Where Are You From? Notions of Identity & Place. New York: Oxford UP,
2014. 101-11. Print.
This is an assigned reading from ENG221 course. In this essay, Lahiri writes
about her memories in Rhode Island. According to the essay, Rhode Island is the
place she considers as home, though she was born in England and her parents are
all Indians. I chose this source so that I can demonstrate that for a person, home
is not just a shelter he lives in. At home, a person has the most intimate feelings
he does not have in the outside world. Some of the experiences at home may be
happy and some of them may be sad and painful. However, a persons
attachment to home will not be decreased due to negative experiences.
Price, Patricia L. "Place." The Wilay-Blackwell Companion to Cultural Geography. First
Edition ed. Minneapolis: Joha Wilay & Sons, 2013. 118-27. Print.
This is an assigned reading from ENG221 course. In this chapter, Price
demonstrates that discussing space and place is significant because human are

not only social animals but also spatial animals. I intend to use her opinion to
advocate my readers to be aware of the importance of my topic, which discusses
the relationship between place and the self.
Tuan, Yi-fu. Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience. Minneapolis: U of
Minnesota, 1977. Print. 136-148.
This is an assigned reading from ENG221 course. This chapter's title is Intimate
Experience of Place, in which Tuan contends that home is a place with the most
intimate experience of a person. Furthermore, Tuan argues that in different life
condition, people have different sentimental feelings toward home. I choose this
source because I am pointing out that home is more of a spiritual place rather
than a shelter, which I don't agree with Tuan.
Tuan, Yi-fu. Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience. Minneapolis: U of
Minnesota, 1977. Print. 149-160.
This is an assigned reading material of ENG221 course. This chapter's title is
Attachment to Homeland. In this chapter, Tuan the center of a nations homeland
is a cluster of historical buildings. I chose this chapter in order to provide my
own point of view that the spirit and culture of a nation or a country can survive
even their buildings and their homeland are all gone because as far as I concern,
homeland is not a specific place or land, but a kind of national spirit, which can
last longer than buildings.
Tuan, Yi-fu. Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience. Minneapolis: U of
Minnesota, 1977. Print. 8-18.
This is an assigned reading material from ENG221 course. This chapter's title is
Experiential Perspective, talking about the relationship between place and space.

Tuan demonstrates that a place is a space with a person's experience and

memories. In other words, a person is sentimentally attached to a place, which is
a fact that makes place different from space. I chose this chapter in Space and
Place because I intend to use this chapter to illustrate the relationship between a
place and a person. Furthermore, I plan to join the conversation with Tuan and
exchange ideas with him, claiming my own perspective.
