ENERGY

Ability to do work
Cannot be created nor destroyed (First law of thermodynamics)
Can be transferred
Exists in many forms
Can be changed from one form to another
FORMS OF ENERGY:
Kinetic Energy energy in motion
o Electrical Energy
Comes from the electrons within atoms
Produced when electrons move from one place to another
Moving charges through wires that produce electricity
Examples:
Lightening
Light Bulbs
Static Shock
Battery that can power remote-controlled cars
o Light Energy
Also called Radiant Energy
Electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves
Examples:
Rainbow
X-Ray
Visible Light
o Thermal Energy
Heat Energy
Created by the motion of atoms and molecules that occurs within an
object
All objects give off thermal energy
Flows from warmer substances to cooler substances.
Examples:
When you heat a pot of water on a stove, the heat from the burner
adds energy to the water, causing the water molecules to move
around more rapidly, increasing the waters thermal energy.
Melting ice cream
Pressing clothes
o Motion Energy
Kinetic Mechanical Energy
Movement of objects from one place to another with motion

Example:
Car racing
Wind
Hydropower
Juan going to school
o Sound Energy
Movement of energy through vibrations in compressions and rarefactions
of longitudinal waves
Examples:
Marching band in a festival
Birds chirping
Yelling
Laughing
Potential Energy stored energy
o Chemical Energy
Stored in chemical bonds
Released by chemical reactions
Examples:
Batteries
Wood, coal, gasoline, and natural gas are fuels that contain
chemical energy. When these fuels are burned, the chemical
energy is released as heat
The food you eat contains chemical energy that is released when
you digest your meal
Fire Crackers
o Stored Mechanical Energy
Energy stored in objects by the application of a force
Examples:
Stretched rubber bands
Tires rolling down the road
Roller Coaster ???
Compressed springs
o Nuclear Energy
Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
Has two forms: fission and fusion
Nuclear energy is released when nuclei are split apart into several pieces,
or when they are combined to form a single, larger nucleus
Examples:
Stars like the sun
Nuclear Power Plants
Nuclear weapons

Nuclear submarines
Radiation therapy
Food processing
