Unit Lesson #4

Math / 1st Grade

Learning Objective: Students will be able to practice safety in the school based
off of safety signs in the school. Students will also be able to use the shapes of
safety signs for bullying purposes.
Alignment with Standards:
SSCA: 59-63-140: Local school districts are to adopt policies prohibiting
harassment; required components; model policies by State Board of Education;
bulling prevention programs.
Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students
will working with bullying in many years to come. This assignment prepares them
for that. The students will be able to create bullying prevention using the shapes
learned in math. The signs will be posted up around the school to be used as a
resource. The cross-curricular connection happens when they connect math and
bullying.

Assessment
Students will be graded
on the rules created and
the shapes and laws
theme. They will be
graded on creativity and
grammar in writing. The
students will also be
graded on rather or not
the bullying laws and
safety computer laws are
being followed.

Accommodations: Accommodations will be made for the following students


needs. ESOL: The student will be given an example to go by. This way the student
can copy what the teacher has written, but change some of the words. The student
will also have extra help and be give special prompts, and vocabulary. Below level
student(s): Will be given an example to use as a guide. The word wall will have
common words that the students will need for their writing. The teacher will be
available for any questions to assist students as well.
Materials:

Chart paper
Markers
Computers
Shapes for sign

Procedures:
1. Invite students to the carpet (if they are not there already)
2. Break the students into small groups for computer time
3. Have the students return to their seats to write the drafts for the rules so
they can be revised by the teacher
4. Send the groups over to complete their rules and place them on the shapes
that are on the computer.
5. Have the students color and decorate the shapes
6. Post shapes with the laws around the classroom and the school
7. Have all students sign a contract saying they will follow all of the laws and
explain to them what will happen if they dont
8. Observe the students for the next week or two
Activity Analysis:
1. Students will create laws for bullying and online safety at school and on any
school property. Students will be using their creative imagination to create
laws on bullying based off of the material they have learned in previous
lessons. There will be no technology used for this portion of the lesson. They
students will be using paper to brainstorm their ideas, and that is why
technology is not needed.
2. For this activity the student will be using the computer to create shapes with
their rule on it for the school. The students will create their shape on either
the computer or the IPad. The student will use the art app on the computer to
construct this project. They can be as creative as they need to be, the shape
just has to be an actual shape. Technology will be needed for this lesson, for
the following reasons above.
