Transitioning from circle time to

washing hands

LESSON PLANNING
Teacher: Ashley Sanchinelli

Rationale Statement:

Transitioning children from circle time to washing their hands for lunch. My hook will
be having children have fun practicing writing a specific letter on a big piece of
paper. I chose this transition because our preschoolers always have a hard time
transitioning from circle time to washing their hands. This is a small, simple activity
they can have fun and also practice their writing skills.

Objectives:

The goal is having all childrens hands washed and sitting on the table without
having them misbehave. Children will learn to be patient and practice their writing
skills and number skills. I expect children to be entertained by writing their favorite
letter or number on the piece of paper and having no child misbehave while they
transition to washing hands and sitting down.
Strand 2: Attentiveness and persistence, concept 1: attentiveness are being met.
Children are being focused on writing their favorite number and/or letter without
being distracted that other children are washing their hands and sitting down for
lunch. They are displaying the ability to hold attention while being engaged in a
activity.

Standards:

Strand 2: Emergent literacy, concept 1: concepts of print are also being met.
Children know that the letters they are printing have a meaning, and a sound.
Concept 4: knowledge of alphabet. Children are able to print out their favorite letters
from the alphabet.
Strand 3: Emergent writing, concept 1, Writing Processes, and Writing Applications.
Children know how to use crayons, markers and pencils to write their favorite letter.

Activity:

Right after circle time our children have a small problem going from being in circle
time to walking over to the sink to wash their hands and get ready for lunch. This
small activity is meant to keep children entertained while still practicing their writing

skills.

1. Right after circle time have children sit down in on table and hand them
out a piece of paper with markers, crayons and pencils.
2. Tell children that today they will be writing their favorite letter and
number. Tell them it could be any letter in the alphabet but they have to
write it down all over their paper.
3. Tell them that whenever they are done, they can go wash their hands and
sit down at the lunch table.
4. After every childs hands have been washed, place their paper in their
cubby.

Materials Needed:

White, loose paper.

Makers
Crayons
Pencils
Children!

Assessment:

If every child has picked at least one favorite letter and wrote it down once. Also, if
all the children get their hands washed without them misbehaving.

Developmental
Domains:

Language is being promoted by this activity. Children get to pick out a letter and
practice their writing skills. Also, small motor skills are being promoted. Children
build up their small motor skills by writing. They use pencils, markers and crayons.

Lesson Reflection:

The planned worked children transition without misbehaving. Unfortunately, not all
children could pick out a favorite letter. Some children were drawing instead of
writing; others didnt feel like doing it at all. Most chidlren did have an interest in
activity, which is always good. They were excited to use all the crayons and markers
but not so much about writing a letter. Next time, I would have them create their
own letter to make their imagination a bit higher.
