presented in various print and multimedia formats, using increasingly detailed sentences, and an increasing variety of

b) Explain inferences and conclusions drawn from close reading of grade appropriate texts and viewing of multimedia
using an increasing variety of verbs and adverbials (e.g., indicates that, suggests, as a result).
c) Use knowledge of morphology (e.g., affixes, Greek and Latin roots), context, reference materials, and visual cues to
determine the meaning of unknown and multiplemeaning words on familiar and new topics.
Big Ideas:
What is cause? What is effect? What are the relationships between cause and effect? How does it apply in real life
situations and in fictional text? What are word clues for cause and effect?

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Recognize and explain cause and effect and its verbs/adverbials used in various print and multimedia formats while
comprehending the points of the text

Recognize cause and effect relationships when they are implied or not elaborated. Students will also add unknown
words encounter in the text to their vocabulary matrix

Unit Summary:
Students will be able to recognize cause and effect texts and understand the relationships between cause and effect in stories,
real life situations, and inferences found in different print formats. They will also acquire new vocabulary and understand
multiple-meaning words for words found in these texts by writing new words in a vocabulary matrix.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Quick write & class sharing- answer
questions about cause and effect and
share their answers in class.

Lesson 1

Formative:
Questions for understanding- ask
questions throughout the readings to
confirm that the students understand
cause & effect relationships as well the
content of the text.
Beach Ball Game- there will be a beach
ball with questions, vocabulary,
examples, etc. written on it. Students will
lightly throw the ball, when the student
catches the ball he/she has to read what
his/her right thumb landed on. Then
he/she has to answer the question or give
an example of what it is asking
Matching- Students will get a piece of
paper with either a cause or an effect.
They will walk around the classroom and
sharing that paper with their peers while
they try to recognize and identify
whether their piece of paper belongs to
another paper his/her peer has.

Summative:
Newspaper Article create a story with
cause and effect - Students will create a
newspaper article of a story of their
choice with at least one cause and at leas
3 effects.
Group Sharing Students will share in
small groups their newspaper article and
answer sheet Students would need to bring two extra
copies of their article. In groups of three,
each student will share their article.
They will try to find the cause, the effect,
and do a quick summary of their two
other peers article.

Lesson Activities:
Students will fill out a guided note to fill out the most
important information of the teachers lecture. They will also
do some practice identifying cause and effect and go over it
in class. At the end of the lecture, they will create a mini
story with a cause leading to effects. As an overview, they
will be asked questions to see if they understood the
presentation, which is the introduction to the lesson.

assignment. If one
student does not
understand a question
of the assignment,
then his/her peers will
ask him/her questions
that will lead his/her

Mindmap- create a digital graphic organizer of one of the
readings listed or approved before hand. Identify cause,
effect and a (possible) solution. Sometimes the causes or the
effects are not listed in a text, this will help students
recognize possible causes and effects by the information
given.
