Observation Task 4 Classroom Management: Managing

Behavior
Focus: Classroom Management Strategies
Objective
The objective of this task is for student teachers to begin to understand the
importance of being proactive in order to manage the classroom behavior effectively
so that learning can take place. An effective teacher uses many strategies to manage
the behavior in the classroom so that learning can take place. This week we are
taking a general look at these various strategies. In the weeks to come, we will focus
on some of the most important behavior management strategies.

Task
Look and listen for the Classroom Management Strategies we
discussed in class. Make a note in the table below.
Management Tactic

1. Organizing a productive
classroom

Can students all see the board?

Does the teacher move children to
different seats if they are noisy or
disruptive?
Is it easy for everyone to walk
around the classroom

Examples of what you saw or heard

Yes, because they are sitting in groups
and the board is clear for all of them.
Yes, not only if they were noisy, also if
they are eating in the class.
Yes, because the class is big enough and
the staff are put on the corners.

2. Classroom Rules and

Procedures

Are rules stated in the positive

form?
Are there no more than 5 rules
Are rules clear and everyone
understands?

Yes, for example, the rule of sharing is

always a reminder for them as it is
difficult for their age, but it's always
positive for them to remember.
No, because they are nursery kids and
they don't need lots of rules to follow,
beside they can't read.
Yes, as long as they are applying the
rules it means that they understand
them.

3. Positive Greetings at the door

How does your MST greet the

students when they arrive?

4. Managing independent work

Is there some independent

seatwork throughout the day
Does the teacher give clear
instructions?
Does the teacher have extra work
for the kids who finish early?

She greets them kindly and ask them

about their Health and she says Good
Morning for each one of them.
Yes, the visit the outside ground and
play, and the library also.
Yes she surely do.
No, she just send them to playground
outside the classroom.

5. Communication

Does the teacher praise often?

What does she say?
If the teacher reprimands (opposite
of praise), is it very short and not
many words?

6. Teach and Model Behavior

Does the teacher teach and model

the behavior she expects? (for
example, if she wants the students
to listen while others are speaking,
does she do the same?)

7. Teacher Proximity (closeness)

Does the teacher move through out

the classroom?
Does she stand near those who are
not focusing?

8. Motivation System

Is there a reward system in the

class?
Is it effective?

9. Goal Setting

Does the teacher set goals for the

classs behavior? (Does she say
something like, OK, today we are
all going to get smiley faces?)

10.Visual schedule posted?

Yes for example she did it with one kid

when she drew a nice picture of a doll,
she said to her "wow, very nice drawing".
Sometimes it's short words and
sometimes she ignores.

Of course she does the same in order to

let them do it by themselves.

Yes she don't stay in one place because

she wants to attract the kids she don't
want them to feel boring.
Yes because she wants them to pay
attention to her.
Not really, she doesn't like to follow this
kind of system with her kids.

No, she don't do goals for each class, she

just run the class normally.

Yes, it's there on the back wall.

an activity?

12.5 to 1 ratio of positive to

negative comments and
interactions?

Does your MST say many more

positive things than negative?

13.Smiling?

Does your MST smile at the children

often? How do the children react?

14.Student answering questions

Yes, because they are still kids and they

need to hear positive things.

Does your teacher give everyone a

chance to answer questions?

Yes she smiles all the time.

They smile back to her and feel good.
Yes, she asks those who don't pay
attention to her all the time.

Observation
This week, observe two children: one who has excellent behavior and one who does not.
Write a paragraph comparing the two. Notice how the teacher interacts with both of them.
Watch how the children react when they are praised or reprimanded.
Watch how they both act when they are learning or working in groups.
What is the effect on the entire class when a child misbehaves?
Write several sentences about what you observed and what you think about it.
Which strategies does your teacher use with these children that you think are most
effective in managing the behavior?

children at school are talented with different behavior. Teachers

are facing a big challenge in how to interact with whom got
excellent behavior and whom does not. For example, the child
that have excellent behavior works very well in groups and share
all of their personal belonging items with others, as well giving a
hand to who ever need some assistant in a home work. on the
other hand the one who does not have a good behavior will not
co-operate with other children and will try to be alone in
playing or doing homework, always they do not paying attention

to the lecture and try to ignore the lesson and not obey the
teacher. If the teacher decide to choose the way in advising the
child by punishing, I think he/she is going to cry, try to be
isolated and will start to stubbornness, so absolutely this way is
not the right way to treat the children. the misbehaving in the
class always effect the entire class in trying to re-behaved like
them and acting the same way. Consequently, the teacher can
use several strategies with children that could be an effective
way in managing the behavior. For example, the teacher shall
build a good relationship with child's parents because children
do what their parents say primarily because they care what their
parents think of them or how they feel about them. Moreover,
spending time is one of the unique way of the strategy; time
should be used for play, conversation, and relationship-building
activities. The more loved and understood the child feels by
teacher, the easier it will be to manage his or her behavior. At
the end, in my observation the good and bad behavior child has
its own way of how to be treated at class. The more closer the
relationship between the teacher and the child, and the more
time to let the children spend working on groups both will give
an advantage turning point from misbehaving to good behaving.
Reflection
Answer the following questions.
Why is it important to be PROACTIVE when trying to manage the behavior in
your class? To make them more active and not to bore them.
What is the effect on the students if there is a lot of misbehavior in the
classroom? It will effect them in a bad way, they will not focus.
Which of the behavior management strategies do you think are the most
important ones? Why? To praise the child when he does something good, this
will attract the bad child to be good. And if I found a noisy kid I will stand next
to him and make him be quite.
Which classroom management strategy do you think you will do particularly
well? Why? I will praise them because they will get satisfied of theirselves and
be good all the time in order to be praised all the time.

Which one do you think will be difficult for you to do? When a kid doesn't focus
I stand next to him and try to make him be polite.
Which one does your MST do really well?
Clap her hands to get their attention and sing for them, in addition to smile all the
time.
