Professional Programs for Engineers and Scientists (PFPR)

Engineering and Science Services (ESS) is offering the following professional programs in Summer 2013:
Computer-Aided Engineering (CADE)
Engineering Management Professional Certification (EMPC)
Information Technology (ITEC)
Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Control (HSE) (OSHA)
Project Management (PRMG)
Real Estate Appraisal and Valuation Expert (REST)

Professional Program Requirements

Each of the professional programs includes six courses, divided between required and elective classes. Each
course is made up of 45 hours of instruction. Candidates must complete the required classes, but electives may
be selected from a group of courses offered. A candidate in one program may take one course as an elective from
the list of courses offered in other professional programs.
To complete the requirements for any of the professional programs, the candidate must successfully complete
the six courses. To earn two professional certificates, 12 courses must be taken. At the end of some of these
programs, the candidate must present an acceptable final project. The certificate requirements may be completed
in two semesters (one year), but it could take up to three years. Some professional programs are also available
via e-learning.
Method of Instruction
Course material is in English; however, a mix of English and Arabic instruction is used in classes to facilitate
communication between instructors and course participants. Courses blend a variety of instructional tools
including case studies, interactive discussions, visual aids and practical sessions.
5

Blackboard
All participants enrolled in ESS professional programs are entitled to access a Blackboard account. Blackboard is a webbased course-management system designed to allow students and faculty members to communicate and use online materials
and activities that complement face-to-face teaching.
Communicating announcements made by faculty members and the ESS administration
Viewing course syllabi
Accessing course materials
Submitting course assignments
Taking tests and quizzes online
Posting grades of assignments, quizzes, projects and exams, as well as final course grades

Registration Fee
The registration fee for each program is indicated on the schedule (LE for Egyptians and U.S. dollars for non-Egyptians). The fees may
be paid in cash or by a check payable to The American University in Cairo. Letters of authorization from companies and organizations
are acceptable.

Registration will be held from May 12 to 23, 2013. One personal photo is required for applicants to receive
their IDs.
Refund Policy
Refunds are made according to the following schedule:

Before the beginning of classes: Full tuition refund

From the first week of classes until the end of the second week: 50 percent of tuition fees
By the end of the third week: No refunds will be made
The refund request should be submitted with the original receipt, course material and a copy of the national ID.
Applicants will receive a check within one month after submitting their refund request.
* ESS may cancel a course where enrollment is low. In that case, the participant would be refunded the full amount, or the fees may be
used toward the completion of another course during any semester.

Drop and Add Policy

Participants are permitted to drop and transfer classes until June 22, 2013.

Incomplete Policy

Participants who are unable to complete a course because of some exceptional circumstances may ask for an incomplete
grade of I. This grade is given with the approval of the course instructor, who will submit an incomplete grade form to the
ESS office. The form should include the following information:
1) Reasons for the incomplete grade
2) Sections of the courses that are missed and need to be completed
3) Action necessary for removal of the incomplete grade, which must be completed by the end of the following semester

An administrative fee of 20 percent of the total course fee will be charged to participants. If necessary action is not taken
on time, the incomplete grade I will be changed to a grade estimated on the basis of the work already completed as part
of the course.
Participants who drop a course (stop attending) without informing the ESS office in writing will receive an F in the course.

Study Period Extension

Professional programs usually take three years to complete. However, participants who are faced with hardships or situations
beyond their control should present proper documentation to justify their cause. Each case will be closely examined by ESS.
In all cases, only one semester of study may be extended.

ESS Communication Channels

To ensure effective ways of communication, ESS will notify participants of any updates or announcements through a variety
of channels, so please check those regularly:
- Email
- ESS website: www.aucegypt.edu/engsrv
- Facebook
- SMS messages: If you do not receive messages from ESS, send your ID and mobile number through email. Be sure to
inform ESS if your mobile number changes.
